About this unit The Cardiac (Coronary) Cath Lab unit is a highly specialized procedural unit focusing on providing care to patients having a variety of cardiac conditions. The lab is a very fast-paced, dynamic unit, that quickly adapts to emergent situations. It consists of 5 procedure rooms, providing care for patients experiencing issues with heart failure; structural issues; peripheral circulatory issues; and coronary issues such as chest pain, STEMI(ST elevated myocardial infarction, NSTEMI(Non-ST elevated myocardial infarction). We consistently have one of the highest volumes of STEMI patients in Michigan, caring for over 300 STEMI patients per year. Our nurses become experts in caring for a large array of patients including, but not limited to, (patients with) Impellas; IABP’s; swan-ganz catheters; ECMO; management of unstable/declining patients, including medication management. Nurses learn the unique skill of caring for a patient, including monitoring, assessing, sedating, while performing the tasks of the procedure. The culture of the lab emphasizes teamwork, as well as supportive interpersonal relationships among staff members, creating a family-like environment. Staff work very closely with physicians. Scope of work Cardiovascular Technologists in the Cardio Invasive Cath lab maintain responsibility for preparation of the cardiac, vascular and transplant surgical suite, intraoperative handling of instruments, maintenance of the sterile field, and evaluation of changing conditions during the surgical procedures, making appropriate responses as needed. Is responsible for maintaining advanced, in-depth knowledge of vascular, cardiac and transplant procedures both pediatric and adult surgical procedures and principles related to those procedures. Integrates services with cath lab staff for procedures requiring expertise in both cath lab procedures and surgical cardiac procedures. Serves as member of the CV/PV team and be available to take team specific call for urgent/emergent cardiac, vascular and transplant cases. Attends case conferences and staff meetings in a meaningful and productive manner. Provides sterile instruments and supplies during the surgical procedure. Performs surgical sponge, needle and instrument counts. Performs pocket closures. Creates and maintains a sterile and safe environment. Prepares case tables with necessary equipment, sterile supplies, instruments, labels and medications/solutions for each surgical case.
