About The Position

Under the direction of the lab manager and medical director, the Cardiac and Vascular Sonographer performs most cardiac and vascular ultrasound exams. This role provides quality patient care using lab physiological and ultrasound equipment, and assists with clinical rotations in both in-patient and out-patient settings as the schedule dictates. The sonographer also participates in after hours and on-call services. All team members are expected to be knowledgeable and compliant with Prisma Health’s values of compassion, dignity, excellence, integrity and teamwork. This position is bonus eligible.

Requirements

  • Associate degree.
  • Graduate of a formal sonography program.
  • One (1) year cardiac and vascular sonography experience performing non-invasive lab studies (clinical rotations during a formal educational program may be considered as related experience).
  • Registered in vascular technology (ARDMS-RVT or CCI-RVS).
  • Registered in echocardiography (ARDMS-AE and/or ARDMS-PE or CCI-RCS).
  • BLS certification.
  • Proficient computer skills (database).
  • Data entry skills.
  • Mathematical skills.
  • Effective at data conversion.

Nice To Haves

  • Medical terminology preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs most modalities of echocardiography (i.e. 2-D, M-Mode, Doppler, and color flow Doppler imaging, as well as, assists with qualified physician with TEE procedures) and peripheral vascular studies (i.e. duplex imaging, Doppler and plethysmography of upper and lower extremity vasculature, abdominal viscera, carotid vasculature and/or intracranial vessels).
  • Performs lab procedures using independent judgement during the exam to accurately differentiate between normal and abnormal findings.
  • Ensures exams follow IAC approved scanning protocol and Smart Protocols are utilized when possible.
  • Reviews images and paperwork to ensure quality exams are complete, thorough and prepared for review by reading physicians.
  • Rotates to multiple lab locations as scheduled and required by the IAC.
  • Participates in the daily workflow by watching the sonographer worklist to ensure timely patient care.
  • Schedules exams through the transport system if applicable.
  • Participates in the Vascular Lab after hours, on-call, weekend and holiday schedules.
  • Operates all lab testing equipment and software packages including but not limited to ultrasound and physiological equipment, EMR and Structured Reporting and PACS.
  • Proficient in the use of telephone, printers, and fax machines.
  • Reports any equipment issues to the appropriate personnel and removes equipment from service.
  • Cleans the equipment and work areas daily and stocks rooms with supplies and linen.
  • Maintains up to date logs to include the monthly cleaning log and the equipment down time log.
  • Attends staff and departmental meetings as well as educational conferences.
  • Participates in discussions.
  • Keeps abreast of changes in the field and participates in collecting data, images and articles as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
