About The Position

The Cardiac Sonographer will perform cardiac ultrasounds in conjunction with cardiac testing for the geriatric and adult populations (within level of competency and training) to acquire and analyze data obtained using cardiac ultrasound modalities and related diagnostic technologies. Working under the general direction of the Cardiovascular Services Medical Director, and the direct supervision of the RN Manager, Cardiology Services, the incumbent will practice in a manner consistent with the Elliot Hospital interprofessional practice model, the intersociety Accreditation Commission for Echocardiography (ICAEL), the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) and the American College of Cardiology (ACC).

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited Ultrasound program or Completion of an allied health profession with clinical experience specific to cardiac ultrasound preferred.
  • A minimum of one year of cardiovascular sonography experience, which may include practicum or clinical experience from an echocardiology program, preferred.
  • Board of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Certification, Required
  • An appropriate credential in echocardiography from the ARDMS, CCI or CARDUP
  • Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS); Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) or Registered Congenital Cardiac Sonographer (RCCS) from Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) within 1 year of eligibility.
  • Must obtain BLS within sixty (60) days of hire required.
  • Incumbent must remain current on required CME credit.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the cardiologist with transesophageal echocardiograms for the adult and geriatric patient.
  • Assist the cardiologist or Cardiovascular Services APRN with non-invasive pharmacological or exercise stress testing.
  • Use independent judgment and systematic problem-solving methods to produce high quality diagnostic information and optimize patient care.
  • Provide an accurate summary of findings to the physician to aid in patient diagnosis and management using standardized measuring and reporting criteria.
  • Compose preliminary echo reports that accurately reflect the content and results of the study according to the Intersociety Accreditation Commission for Echocardiography (ICAEL) standards.
  • Complete pre-procedure intake based on patient/family interview, examination, and review of clinical data; communicate patient status and patient needs to physician and other team members.
  • Communicate appropriate patient information effectively and efficiently within the health care team.
  • Assist in other areas of cardiovascular services, as needed.
  • Perform department duties independently including, but not limited to, equipment checks, stocking of supplies and maintaining supply par levels.
  • Participate in the care, cleaning, and preventative maintenance of equipment; collaborate with manufacturers and biomedical engineering to troubleshoot equipment malfunctions.
  • Partake in and support quality improvement; collect accurate data for certifying agencies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
