About The Position

Since the late 1800's, the Transtar companies, a group of rail carriers, have been an important component in this country's industrial development, moving billions of tons of raw materials to manufacturing sites, transporting finished products to market, storing and handling bulk commodities, and providing rail transport services to hundreds of satisfied customers throughout the nation's industrial heartland. The Car Repairer is an entry-level maintenance position of Transtar’s Union Railroad Company located in Duquesne, Pennsylvania. The Car Repair Department is responsible for the building, rebuilding, repairing, and rerailing of railroad cars.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required
• A minimum of one year outdoor work experience is required
• Mechanical aptitude is required
• Valid driver's license is required
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
• Adherence to safety procedures/guidelines at all times
• Wear safety protection such as hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, protective clothing, and boots with metatarsal protection
• Punctuality, consistent attendance, self-direction and work collaboratively in a team environment for the success of the operations
• Must pass assessment test(s)

Nice To Haves

• Trade school training is preferred
• Two years of welding, burning and fabricating experience, preferably in an industrial environment is preferred

Responsibilities

• Inspect, repair and maintain all types of railroad cars
• Replace wheels, draft gears and safety appliances
• Test airbrake system
• Re-rail cars and locomotives
• Adjust and bind loads
• Clean, prepare and paint cars
• Use various hand, electric and pneumatic power tools
• Use burning torch and equipment
