About The Position

Performs difficult, advanced technical work providing advanced life support and emergency medical treatment to sick and injured persons in a pre-hospital setting; protects life and property through assisting in fire suppression; performs technical rescue, hazardous material response, fire prevention, and other duties as assigned. Work is often executed under very limited supervision. Continuous supervision is exercised over Firefighter-EMTs, Firefighter-Paramedics, EMTs, Paramedics, and other junior personnel. The Captain Firefighter-Paramedic will perform duties as the shift lead in the absence of other assigned senior officers providing direct supervision over shift volunteers, part-time shift employees, and other subordinate employees. Duties will include shift documentation, incident reporting, crew supervision, training coordination, training delivery, employee skill validation, and command & control of emergency incidents.

Ability to read and write the English language; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; have good health and strength sufficient to perform arduous work, and motivation to maintain personal fitness and wellness; ability to learn the street system and physical layout of the City; ability to evaluate and recognize dangers and medical conditions and take immediate action necessary for the protection of life and property; ability to climb ladders and work at considerable heights, and also to work well below grade in dark, confined spaces while wearing protective equipment to include SCBA; ability to learn a wide variety of fire-rescue-ems duties and methods within a reasonable working test period; ability to read and interpret maps, manuals, reports; ability to utilize computer technology to document factual, accurate, objective, and complete incident narrative reports; ability to adapt to a number of different situations that could all happen at the same time; ability to learn to operate all fire and medical apparatus and equipment and to share knowledge of one’s own individual skills and expertise; ability to accurately and efficiently operate a computer, printer, emergency vehicles, radio, medical and other fire-medical equipment, i.e., spine boards, life aid, splinting and extrication equipment, diagnostic equipment; knowledge of applicable local, State, and Federal regulations related to emergency medical services and emergency medical procedures; thorough knowledge of paramedic care techniques, including EKG interpretation, cardiac monitor, defibrillator, IV therapy, advanced airway skills and drug administration; ability to verbally communicate the status of the patient and situations to other responders, providers, and hospital staff; ability to demonstrate good judgment and remain calm during high stress situations; ability to reassure patients, bystanders and coworkers by working in a confident and efficient manner to accomplish required tasks; working knowledge of fire-medical equipment maintenance.

Shift lead duties will require the ability to lead, direct, and supervise personnel effectively; to maintain discipline; to exercise sound judgment and to cooperate with other municipal officers, and to deal with the general public in a professional manner.
Associates/Technical degree in emergency medical service technology, or related field, and considerable emergency medical experience in an ALS transport service, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Firefighter I & II (IFSAC, Pro-Board, or State of Kansas).
Fire Instructor I (IFSAC, Pro-Board, or State of Kansas).
Fire Officer I (IFSAC, Pro-Board, or State of Kansas).
HazMat Operations.
NWCG S130 Wildland Firefighter with ‘Red Card.’
Current Kansas Board of EMS Mobile Intensive Care Technician (MICT).
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or Pediatric Education of Prehospital Providers (PEPP) certification.
NIMS ICS-100, 200, 300.
CPR (HealthCare Provider or Equivalent).
Valid driver's license in the State of Kansas.
The individual must comply with the employer’s random drug and alcohol testing requirements.

Responsibilities

Responds to fire alarms, operates pumps and auxiliary equipment; lays and connects hose; holds nozzles, directs foam or water streams; raises ladders, uses chemical extinguishers, bars, hooks, lines, and other equipment.
Ventilates burning buildings by opening windows and skylights using power equipment or by chopping holes in roofs and floors; removes persons from danger, administers first aid to injured persons, performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, vacuuming and removing water, cleaning up and removing debris.
Responds to vehicle accident scenes and performs extrication techniques using specialized heavy hydraulic equipment during emergency situations.
Responds to any variety of technical rescue situations to triage, stabilize and perform within training level and ability specialized, technical operations to include: Collapse, Low Angle, High Angle, Flood, Swift Water, Ice, and other dangerous, life threatening situations.
Participates in live fire, technical rescue, hazardous materials, and medical response training. Attends classes in firefighting and emergency medical care.
Prepares and submits reports and forms regarding alarms, inspections, equipment maintenance, and other matters.
Relays orders, instructions, and information accurately.
Tests fire hydrants and records flow information for Department use.
Performs assigned company level fire inspections and checks building exits and related structures and appurtenances for compliance with fire prevention ordinances.
Provides advanced life support services to the sick and injured, including driving an ambulance, operating necessary equipment, assessing patient condition, providing appropriate treatment, relaying information to medical personnel, and safely transporting the patient to a medical facility.
Communicates the status of the patients to other emergency providers and hospital staff; creates accurate and detailed records and/or reports for each emergency call; cleans and restocks response vehicles and equipment following usage.
Operates radio communication equipment and performs radio and pager checks on a daily basis.
Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of Department property including facilities, grounds, apparatus, equipment, and supplies. This maintenance can include any variety of care from servicing, cleaning, disinfection, testing, installation, setup, and minor to moderate repairs.
Maintains an inventory of station supplies and assists with the purchasing of supplies.
Assists in developing plans for special assignments.
Participates in developing and presenting public awareness and training programs.
Assists in the formal and informal training of new staff.
May function as an IC in the ICS scope until relieved by an officer and will function in the ICS capacity assigned by the IC.
When performing shift lead duties, shall 1) ensure minimum staffing levels and coordinate staffing callbacks as needed, 2) ensure the completion of daily equipment inspections, maintenance, and station tasks, 3) coordinate daily crew training plans and documentation, 4) ensure the completion and review of incident reports, 5) interface with shift leads, supervisors, officers or other designees to ensure proper information pass on.
Performs other duties and activities as assigned.
This position is designated as “essential” requiring the member to report to work on time in a variety of situations, including emergency callbacks.
