About The Position

A Peer Coach is a student guide for new students at Ferris State University. Peer Engagement Coaches communicate regularly with students through texts, emails, phone calls, and in-person meetings to provide guidance, encouragement, and important campus information. In addition to one-on-one support, coaches promote campus resources and events, facilitate study tables and first-year programs, and help create a welcoming, supportive environment for new students.

Requirements

  • Be an active and engaged student leader who participates on campus
  • Be in good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 2.5
  • Be available to commit from approximately August 1 through May 5
  • Demonstrate the ability to build positive relationships with students from diverse backgrounds
  • Have a strong desire to help students achieve personal, academic, and career goals
  • Possess strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Provide a supportive and caring connection for assigned students
  • Be dependable, professional, and respectful of confidentiality
  • Be willing to participate in training and program responsibilities
  • Adhere to the policies and procedures of Ferris State, Career and Professional Success and the Peer Engagement Coach program
  • Establish and maintain appropriate conduct with assigned students
  • Act as a positive role model and provide a supportive and caring connection for assigned students
  • As an individual who is responsible for driving on behalf of the university, a driving record check will be run pursuant to university policies. The individual will be required to sign an authorization to run a criminal history background and driving record check.

Responsibilities

  • Support students through frequent and creative outreach including texts, calls, emails, surveys, and meet-ups
  • Actively learn and stay informed about campus resources and online tools so you can confidently guide students to the services that best support their success
  • Help students develop the skills needed to succeed academically and personally
  • Assist students with basic academic support
  • Connect caseload students with basic needs resources
  • Use training to ask thoughtful questions that help identify student barriers and guide them to appropriate resources
  • Encourage students to stay motivated, attend activities, get involved on campus, build friendships, and set personal goals
  • Provide information for first year students of important dates and campus events through the First Year Newsletter and Ferris360 group
  • Engage in campus events and promote student attendance
  • Host and coordinate study tables and other academic focused events
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate first year events, including tasks such as room reservations, catering, advertising, purchasing supplies, event setup, staffing events, and coordinating volunteers. Event setup may involve transporting University property in a personal vehicle
  • Accurately document student interactions and program information in Navigate
  • Utilize Excel to organize student information and record engagement
