About The Position

Under the general direction and supervision of the Director, Counseling Assistance Program for Students (CAPS), the CAPS Counselor is responsible for the development, implementation, and delivery of college counseling services that promote student academic success, psychological wellness, and retention. The Counselor will provide direct counseling services to students on all three campuses (and Learning Centers if needed) as well as provide development and oversight of the CAPS internship program, ensuring that interns are trained on college policies, procedures, and SCC Student Development. The Counselor would organize group counseling sessions, form peer support groups, establish student and employee training and development programs, and assist in the development and implementation of a psychological wellness program for students. The Counselor would also serve as a campus confidential advisor for Title IX compliance and assist in the drug and alcohol prevention program. This is a full-time, regular position based at the Lincoln Campus, with travel to the Beatrice and Milford Campuses.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of and skills in facilitating group processes, managing group dynamics, and providing positive leadership. Ability to organize and direct group activities for specific tasks (i.e., improving student wellness to positively impact student retention, persistence, and completion)
  • Knowledge of post-secondary student development theory, and student mental health best practices and procedures.
  • Ability to operate computers, software, and related technology equipment, including Microsoft Office suite and database systems (Colleague, CRM Advise).
  • Ability to communicate and maintain a positive understanding of the role and mission of the CAPS office.
  • Ability to demonstrate diplomacy required to resolve conflicts and complaints.
  • Knowledge of and experience with student success correlates such as the importance of academic preparedness, developmental education, family support, balancing work and academics, cost, student success skills, self-care, stress management, persistence, recognizing personal and family risk factors such as a history of substance abuse, managing unexpected events (death in family, etc.), students' personality and dominant traits.
  • Ability to meet the necessary travel requirements of the position..
  • Familiarity and experience with academic, aptitude, and interest tests and measurement instruments, and the ability to interpret and use reports.
  • Ability to mentor, lead, and supervise master's level counseling interns.
  • Ability to work independently to accomplish strategic plan outcomes.
  • Knowledge and experience with data analysis and reporting for the purposes of planning, budgeting, and grant writing.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing, in person, and on the phone.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds for short distances and move tables, chairs, and media equipment when necessary.
  • The individual must possess the above skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
  • Master's degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social work, Marriage or Family Therapy.
  • Provisional Licensure as a Mental Health Practitioner in the state of Nebraska at the time of hire.
  • One (1) year of professional work experience providing counseling/mental health/clinical services.

Nice To Haves

  • Full Licensure as an Independent Mental Health Practitioner in the state of Nebraska at the time of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct counseling services to students and administer student counseling services.
  • Supervise, manage, and evaluate the counseling interns
  • Provide training, crisis intervention, and guidance to staff in professional coaching, student and personal wellbeing, and active listening techniques
  • Interpret and use psychological reports and psychometric information related to cognitive or mental health concerns that may affect student success and suggest services or strategies to cope with or overcome such concerns or impediments.
  • Provide recommendations to the Director and Deans regarding a student's suitability for enrollment as part of the Student Code of Conduct adjudication process.
  • Implement and oversee systems for assuring follow-up with students, especially when there is a threat of harm to self or others.
  • Assists in monitoring a budget for the purpose of managing and planning the activities of specific projects and programs.
  • Coordinate and plan ongoing outreach and promotion of counseling services, as well as annual mental health and wellness awareness activities at various SCC locations.
  • Work collaboratively to plan and develop leadership, service learning, and training opportunities for students, including, but not limited to, alcohol and other drug awareness, relationship violence, bystander intervention, resiliency, mental and emotional well-being, and interpersonal relationship skills.
  • Serve as a liaison and provide training for Faculty and Staff concerning community resources and services available to students.
  • Serve as needed on the college's CARE (College Access to Resources for Excellence). The CARE team is SCC's Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) to address students who are disruptive or potentially dangerous to themselves or others.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information, records, and documentation files.
  • Support and promote an environment of belonging where all students, faculty members, and college employees feel welcomed, valued, and empowered to contribute. Foster a community where each individual and their varied perspectives enrich the educational experience and create a safe and respectful environment. Support the College's policies and programming related to access, fair employment, and equal opportunities for all.
  • Serves on college and community regional or state committees as deemed beneficial to the college.
  • Presents both internal and external public presentations.
  • Represents the college at events related to college student mental health or the college as required.
  • May be required to perform associated duties, functions, or assignments in other divisions/programs/areas as required.
  • Perform other College functions and duties as assigned.
  • Must be able to work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as required. Work schedules (hours/days/work location) are scheduled by Southeast Community College based on the needs of the College. Work hours, shifts, days, and work locations may vary depending on the needs of Southeast Community College and are subject to modification. Emergency or scheduled special activities may require hours outside of the regular workweek.

  • SCC BEN Dollars - Eligible Employees: Full-time status. Regular employees with an FTE of 0.75 or greater will be eligible for SCC Ben Dollars. All employees will be required to elect a health insurance option. If the cost of insurance coverage selected by an employee exceeds the SCC Ben Dollars available, all additional costs will be withheld from the employee's paycheck. Any SCC Ben Dollars that the employee does not elect to use for the purchase of dependent health and dental insurance will be paid to the employee in cash at $0.93 per $1.00 benefit dollar. All amounts paid are subject to withholding for income and employment taxes, but not subject to the College's contribution toward the Retirement Savings Plan - Group Retirement Account (GRA).
