About The Position

Delaware Capitol Police provide statewide law enforcement services to all three branches of state government. This level describes full performance work involving traditional law enforcement, community policing, protective services and threat management. Law enforcement tasks include responding to calls for service, investigating potential criminal, domestic, and illegal drug activity, handling disorderly persons, making arrests, transporting committed persons to correctional and medical facilities, preventing breach of release and/or escape, responding to alarms, conducting property checks, directing protective escorts, and handling persons wanted on outstanding capiases and warrants. Security related tasks include screening entrants and packages to detect weapons, contrabands and hazardous materials. Career Ladder Upon satisfactory completion of department promotional standards and job requirements, employees may be eligible to be promoted to the next level. Requirements

• Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:
• Possession of an active State of Delaware Council on Police Training Certificate or equivalent, OR eligibility for recertification per Delaware Administrative Code Title 1, Chapter 801, Section 8.0 Re-activation Requirements of Police Officers.
• At least one year experience as a Certified Police Officer.
• One year of experience in law enforcement which includes interpreting and enforcing laws, investigating suspicious or criminal activity, interviewing witnesses, victims, suspects and defendants, executing search and arrests warrants and processing defendants.
• Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
• Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
• A satisfactory fingerprint based criminal background check administered by the Delaware State Police is required as a Condition of Hire.
• All new hires are required to report to the Statewide New Employee Orientation (SNEO) on their first day of employment.

Responsibilities

• Implements appropriate law enforcement action in response to criminal, domestic violence, traffic, miscellaneous complaints and other activities.
• Investigates suspicious and criminal activity which includes detecting, collecting and preserving physical evidence, interviewing victims, witnesses, suspects and defendants, processing charging documents, executing search and arrest warrants and processing defendants.
• Performs vehicle and foot patrol of assigned areas.
• Performs community policing through informational presentations and educational seminars for other state agencies, schools, the public and community organizations.
• Provides protective services to judges, victims, jurors, witnesses, state employees and visitors, legislators and the general public as needed.
• Provides assistance to other law enforcement agencies as back-up or primary response.
• Takes physical custody of and transports felons and prisoners to appropriate facilities.
• Presents evidence and testimony and prosecutes cases in court.
• Prepares a variety of reports pertaining to response of incidents, daily activities, investigations and training.
