The Capitol Area Guard I position involves applying proficient knowledge and competency in the operation of electronic security systems, video surveillance equipment, telephone communication systems, and fire systems. The role requires continual observation of state office buildings by physically checking all interior and exterior doors, stairways, lobbies, roof hatches, etc., to ensure safety and security for affected areas, employees, and citizens. The guard must diligently monitor and interpret information received via the electronic security system, video surveillance equipment, and fire system, taking appropriate action as necessary. The position also involves notifying appropriate personnel via radio and/or phone to respond to alarms, accidents, and other emergency situations. Establishing and maintaining professional contact with government officials, legislators, dignitaries, state employees, visitors, and citizens is essential to uphold the image and reputation of the Kansas Highway Patrol. The guard is responsible for maintaining a written log of all alarms, phone calls, and radio traffic to provide a record of troop activity. Good communication skills are necessary for interacting with the community, and the guard must build and maintain good working relations with other state agencies. The position also requires checking employee identification and signing in public visitors when required. Additionally, the guard must maintain certifications in CPR, first aid, and AED, and render assistance to individuals experiencing medical problems or accidents. Attendance at all required agency meetings and training sessions on equipment and agency systems is mandatory, and the guard must ensure that agency equipment and uniforms are presented neatly and cleanly.
