Your day to day as a CAPA Specialist As a CAPA Specialist at Barrett Petfood, you will play a crucial role in supporting our Corrective and Preventive Action (CAPA) program. This position involves executing thorough investigations and coordinating cross-functional problem-solving efforts to tackle quality issues head-on. You will ensure that CAPA documentation is clear, complete, and timely, focusing on day-to-day execution tasks like root cause analysis, action planning, and verification processes. By conducting effectiveness checks, you will contribute to strengthening food safety and quality compliance while driving continuous improvement initiatives throughout the organization. Requirements

  • Associate degree or equivalent experience in Quality, Food Safety, Manufacturing, or a related field.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment (food manufacturing preferred).
  • Working knowledge of CAPA principles, root cause analysis, and controlled documentation.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Biology, Chemistry, Quality, or related discipline.
  • Experience in SQF/GFSI, FDA, or USDA-regulated environments.
  • Experience using a Quality Management System (QMS) or electronic CAPA tracking tools.
  • Experience supporting customer-facing CAPA responses and third-party audits.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct and document CAPA investigations for deviations, nonconformances, audit findings, and customer complaints.
  • Facilitate root cause analysis using structured methods and ensure conclusions are evidence-based.
  • Develop and document corrective and preventive actions with clear owners, due dates, and measurable completion criteria.
  • Coordinate cross-functional teams (Quality, Operations, Maintenance, Sanitation, Supply Chain) to implement actions.
  • Perform verification and effectiveness checks; collect objective evidence and document results prior to closure.
  • Maintain CAPA files in an organized, audit-ready format; ensure records meet internal and customer requirements.
  • Track assigned CAPA tasks and timelines; communicate status updates and escalate risks to Quality leadership.
  • Support internal, customer, and third-party audits by retrieving CAPA records and providing updates as requested.
  • Trend CAPA data (repeat issues, sources, root causes, closure time) and recommend improvement opportunities.
  • Follow applicable procedures for nonconforming product handling and related quality records as required by site programs.
