About The Position

The Canine Behavior Center Manager position is responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring all programs intended to identify behavioral concerns, modify behavior, and ensure best practices in handling dogs. This position will oversee Canine Behavior Center (CBC) staff to ensure science-based aversive-free methods are implemented, and that programs align with best practices for behavior modification in the shelter environment. In addition, they will monitor and communicate any building or system concerns for the CBC.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 1-3 years in a leadership position, preferably in an animal welfare setting.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Proficient computer skills with the ability to prepare reports and maintain an efficient recordkeeping system.
  • In possession of, or ability to acquire at least one of the following certifications within the first year: CPDT-KA, KPA-CTP, CBCC-KA or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of animal training, reading animal body language, behavior modification knowledge, experience adhering to LIMA standards and a thorough understanding of classical and operant conditioning.
  • Self-motivated, organized individual with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and customer service skills.
  • Exhibit flexibility and professionalism in a fast-paced, stressful environment.
  • High school diploma required
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

Nice To Haves

  • BA/BS/MA college degree in a relevant field a plus
  • Behavior or training certification completed or in progress: examples – CPDT-KA, KPA-CTP, and/or CBCC-KA

Responsibilities

  • Manage the daily operations of the CBC staff through effective delegation, support, motivation, and fair leadership to all team members.
  • Responsible for interviewing, hiring, training, and disciplinary measures for all CBC staff.
  • Manage the schedule and oversee onboarding of CBC team members and CBC volunteers.
  • Compile data for progress reports for each dog in the behavior modification program.
  • Positively address, resolve, and report departmental concerns in a timely manner.
  • Design, oversee, and update protocols for behavior modification, enrichment and processes at the CBC.
  • Oversee individual behavior modification plans for all dogs in Wayside Waifs’ behavior program.
  • Effectively manage behavior cases with the veterinary clinic when medications are required.
  • Collaborate about all dogs that may need to enter a behavior program.
  • Maintain progress reports on all dogs in the behavior program.
  • Hold weekly meetings with the CBC staff to discuss progress/regression of all dogs.
  • Oversee a follow-up program for dogs adopted from a behavior program.
  • Develop and implement SOP guidelines that ensure best practices for behavior, enrichment and safety of staff.
  • Meet weekly with the Director of Canine Behavior and Training to discuss any issues, length of stay with each dog and progress/regression of each behavior dog.
  • Maintain a good working relationship with the other departments and their managers.
  • Work with the foster department to notify them when dogs are ready for foster and assist with behavior plans for dogs in foster care.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule which may occasionally include evenings and weekends.
  • Foster a team environment to meet departmental goals.
  • Sit on the Canine Welfare Committee and assist as needed with behavioral humane euthanasia.
  • Assist with Rescue Response deployment and possess a strong understanding of humane handling of potentially fractious or feral dogs.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Oversee staff and volunteers as they work with individual animals.
  • Coach staff by providing regular, ongoing feedback as well as conducting a mid-year and yearly performance review.
  • Review and approve staff timecards and PTO requests.
  • Research continuing education opportunities for staff.
  • Hold a weekly team meeting with staff and attend manager or leadership meetings as directed.
