The Cancer Registry Specialist - Temporary is responsible for supporting the Oklahoma Central Cancer Registry (OCCR) by collecting and maintaining complete, timely and high-quality cancer data from various Oklahoma health facilities. Data are collected in accordance with Oklahoma Law and according to the standards set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-National Program for Cancer Registries and the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries. The hourly rate is up to $27.19 based on education and experience and up to 20 hours per week.

  • Assist OCCR functions to consolidate reported cancer cases, review duplicate cases, case finding, abstracting cancer information from hospital records, cleaning data through edits and completing follow up for cases reported through death certificates.
  • Process and maintain tumor-specific and demographic information related to cancer cases in the OCCR database.
  • Provide support to a federally and state legislatively mandated surveillance system and encourage compliance with Oklahoma State Statutes regarding the reporting of cancer cases.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of and supports mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior.
  • Works effectively in team environment, participating and assisting their peers.
  • High school diploma and four (4) years’ experience working with cancer registry data OR an associate degree from a Health Information Management (HIM) program, certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) and two (2) years’ experience working with cancer registry data.
  • Current certification as a Certified Oncology Data Specialist (ODS-C) is required.
  • All applicants are subject to a background check and must be legally authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.
  • Applicants must be willing to perform all job-related travel associated with this position.
  • Being present at the office is an essential function of the job
  • Preference will be given to applicants with two or more years’ post ODS-C certification.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in abstracting cancer cases required; strong understanding of cancer registry operations and functions is preferred; strong customer service and communication skills both oral and written; good interpersonal skills; the ability to be detail oriented.
