About The Position

The Cancer Navigation Program Supervisor serves as the operational and programmatic leader for Whitman-Walker’s Cancer Patient Navigation Program. This role ensures high-quality, equitable navigation services across the continuum of cancer care. The Supervisor will manage and support the Cancer Patient Navigator, Financial Navigator, and any additional cancer navigation roles, ensuring seamless coordination, quality assurance, compliance with grant and reporting requirements, and alignment with Whitman-Walker’s mission of dignity, inclusion, and health justice. While this role is primarily focused on cancer navigation, the Supervisor is also expected to support broader Community Health initiatives, including HIV prevention services such as outreach, HIV/STI testing, and PrEP and PEP navigation, as needed to meet organizational priorities.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of oncology care systems, social determinants of health, and patient navigation best practices.
  • Experience working with communities disproportionately impacted by cancer, including Black women, communities of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, immigrants, uninsured and under-insured people.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, problem-solving, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience with data collection, reporting, and outcomes monitoring.
  • Oncology Patient Navigation certification or related credential.
  • Experience managing grant-funded or public health programs.
  • Excellent communication skills, in person, in writing and via telephone to diverse audiences such as patients, clients, other employees and Board members.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, complex work environment with competing priorities.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain important executive records an accurate, timely and confidential manner.
  • Clear, concise written communication skills with good attention to grammar and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of general office terminology, standards, practices and demands.
  • Strong word processing, proofreading, and database management skills.
  • Sensitivity to all areas of diversity, including HIV status, race, ethnicity, ability, age, sexual orientation and gender identity.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Social Work, Nursing, Human Services, or related field required; Master’s preferred.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in cancer navigation, oncology services, or chronic disease navigation.
  • Minimum 2 years of supervisory, program coordination, or leadership experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide operational, and programmatic leadership for the Cancer Navigation Program.
  • Develop and maintain workflows for cancer screening navigation, diagnosis support, treatment of navigation, and survivorship care.
  • Ensure timely coordination of referrals, care transitions, follow-ups, and supportive service connections.
  • Provide direct patient navigation as needed to ensure continuity of services and program operations.
  • Lead program quality improvement, evaluation, and performance monitoring efforts.
  • Ensure compliance with funder, reporting, and regulatory requirements.
  • Directly supervise cancer patient navigator, financial navigator, and any additional navigation or support staff as program expands
  • Provide coaching, mentorship, onboarding, professional development, and performance evaluations.
  • Facilitate regular team meetings, conferences, and staff support.
  • Serve as key liaison with internal departments and external healthcare systems, oncology partners, community organizations, and funders.
  • Strengthen referral networks and build partnerships to expand access to culturally affirming cancer care.
  • Champion trauma-informed, anti-racist, LGBTQ-affirming, and culturally responsive care practices.
  • Identify gaps in access and advocate for system improvements benefiting marginalized communities.
  • Participate in management meetings to act upon a variety of matters including personnel matters and provide updates and reports as requested
  • Support management in fact finding efforts concerning managerial actions or union grievance processing
  • Review and make recommendations for changes to collective bargaining agreements and the Employee Handbook to ensure ongoing compliance
  • Support Community Health outreach and HIV prevention initiatives, including HIV/STI testing events and community-based engagement activities.
  • Provide oversight or direct support for PrEP and PEP education and navigation, as needed.
  • Collaborate with Community Health teams to align cancer navigation efforts with broader prevention and wellness strategies.
  • Assist in cross-program coordination to ensure integrated, status-neutral approaches to cancer and HIV prevention services.
