About The Position

The Can and Tooling Design Engineer will be responsible for the design, development, and optimization of aluminum beverage cans and associated tooling. This role involves working with can geometry, tooling, and performance parameters to enhance manufacturing efficiency, product integrity, and sustainability. The candidate will leverage 3D Solid Modeling with field and laboratory testing, collaborating with internal teams, suppliers, and customers to ensure successful implementation into production.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Packaging Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in can design, tooling development, or packaging engineering (preferably in two-piece can manufacturing).
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks and/or AutoCAD Inventor for CAD modeling, drafting, and design validation.
  • Strong understanding of high-speed can manufacturing processes, tooling interactions, and quality control principles.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data management, calculations, and engineering analysis.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work cross-functionally with engineering, production, and suppliers.
  • Strong communication skills to interface with internal teams, customers, and industry partners.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for structural simulations and performance evaluations.
  • Experience with metal forming and light weighting strategies.
  • Knowledge of material testing methods and manufacturing quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop new can and tooling designs to meet customer and market requirements.
  • Optimize can geometry and tooling concepts for high-speed can manufacturing.
  • Utilize SolidWorks and/or AutoCAD Inventor for 3D modeling, drafting, and design validation.
  • Collaborate with suppliers, customers, and internal experts to validate designs through testing and production trials.
  • Assist in design troubleshooting and root cause analysis for performance issues in production.
  • Manage technical documentation, engineering drawings, and revision control to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Work with suppliers, OEMs, and customers to ensure design feasibility and integration into existing production systems.
  • Maintain technical knowledge of can forming processes, tooling interactions, and material properties.
  • Utilize Microsoft Excel for data analysis, calculations, and reporting related to can and tooling designs.
  • Travel up to 25% to customer sites, manufacturing facilities, and industry events as needed.
