About The Position

The Campus Security Officer is responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, and supportive school environment through proactive supervision, relationship-building, and effective response to incidents and emergencies. This role emphasizes prevention, visibility, and positive engagement with students while enforcing school safety protocols and expectations. The Campus Security Officer collaborates closely with school staff, administration, and tribal and local emergency services to support coordinated safety efforts, uphold district and tribal values, and ensure a secure and welcoming learning environment for all.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum of one year of experience in security, law enforcement, military, or a related field
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Valid Washington State driver’s license and proof of insurance
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification, or ability to obtain upon hire
  • Completion of a Washington State School Security Officer Training Program, or ability to complete within a specified timeframe
  • Successful criminal background clearance
  • Successful and/or clear drug screening
  • Principles and practices of school safety, security operations, and student supervision
  • Applicable federal, state, tribal, and local laws, codes, and school policies related to safety and student conduct
  • Emergency response procedures, including crisis intervention, incident command basics, and threat response
  • De-escalation techniques, conflict resolution strategies, and behavior intervention approaches for youth
  • Trauma-informed practices and their impact on student behavior (lightly included—appropriate for K–12 best practice)
  • Cultural competency and responsiveness, particularly in working with Native and diverse student populations
  • Basic report writing, documentation standards, and communication protocols
  • Maintain a consistent, visible, and professional presence that promotes safety, trust, and approachability
  • Assess situations quickly, think critically, and respond appropriately in routine and emergency situations
  • Effectively de-escalate conflicts using sound judgment, communication skills, and established techniques
  • Build and maintain positive relationships while enforcing rules and maintaining professional boundaries
  • Communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing, with diverse audiences
  • Work independently with minimal supervision while contributing effectively as part of a team
  • Follow and consistently apply policies, procedures, and safety protocols
  • Maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion in sensitive situations
  • Collaborate effectively with school staff, administration, families, and external partners, including law enforcement
  • Demonstrate cultural awareness, humility, and respect in all interactions
  • Remain calm, composed, and effective under pressure

Nice To Haves

  • Two or more years of progressively responsible experience in school security, law enforcement, military, or a closely related field
  • Demonstrated experience working with youth in educational or community-based settings
  • Formal training or certification in de-escalation, crisis intervention, or behavior management (e.g., CPI, PBIS, restorative practices)
  • Experience implementing or supporting school safety plans, threat assessment protocols, or emergency response systems
  • Prior experience collaborating effectively with law enforcement agencies, including tribal police or community-based safety partners
  • Knowledge of, or experience working within, Native American/Alaska Native communities, including an understanding of cultural values and community dynamics

Responsibilities

  • Provide continuous, visible supervision across campus to promote a safe, orderly, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors
  • Monitor buildings, grounds, parking areas, and school events to identify, prevent, and address safety and security concerns
  • Proactively build and maintain positive, professional relationships with students, staff, families, and visitors to support a culture of safety and trust
  • Enforce school policies, procedures, and behavioral expectations consistently, fairly, and respectfully
  • Respond promptly to incidents, conflicts, and emergencies; assess situations, apply sound judgment, and take appropriate action in alignment with established protocols
  • Utilize de-escalation, conflict resolution, and restorative practices to manage student behavior and prevent escalation
  • Control and monitor campus access, ensuring that all visitors follow established entry and sign-in procedures
  • Conduct routine security checks of facilities, including doors, windows, and exterior areas, and report hazards or vulnerabilities
  • Collaborate with school administration, staff, and tribal/local law enforcement and emergency responders to support coordinated safety efforts
  • Prepare accurate, timely, and detailed incident reports and documentation in accordance with district requirements
  • Support and participate in safety planning, emergency preparedness, and required drills (e.g., lockdown, evacuation, reunification)
  • Communicate effectively using radios, phones, and in-person interactions to ensure clear and timely information sharing
  • Maintain situational awareness and mobility throughout the campus, including the ability to respond quickly to emergent situations
  • Model and reinforce a safe, respectful, and culturally responsive school climate aligned with district and tribal values
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
