About The Position

The Campus Safety Officer at Gustavus Adolphus College is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This full-time position operates on an overnight shift from 7 PM to 5 AM, working 10-hour shifts on an 8-week rotating schedule that includes weekends and holidays. The officer responds to emergencies, enforces laws and campus policies, and provides support and information to the campus community.

Requirements

  • High school degree or equivalent.
  • Prior working experience in safety and security.
  • Maturity with the proven ability to use good judgment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Physical requirements to match the demands of the position.
  • Pass background investigation and Minnesota Security Guard Background Check.
  • Maintain valid Minnesota Driver's License.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Following hire must successfully complete First Responder Certification and Field Officer Training Program.

Responsibilities

  • Protect life and property, prevent and suppress criminal activity, preserve peace and respond to requests for safety and security services.
  • Enforce state law and campus policies.
  • Respond to violent, sensitive, hostile and/or unsafe situations.
  • Provide information, direction and support.
  • Address unsafe situations/conditions.
  • Enforce and support all college rules and regulations.
  • Support off-campus authorities as needed or requested.
  • Comply with all policies and procedures in the Campus Safety Department manual.
  • Respond to all safety calls, determine if personal safety is at risk, secure the area in question, and alert the proper department(s) on campus.
  • Conduct interviews and investigations and document these activities.
  • Patrol the College campus including all student housing, academic and administrative facilities, and grounds.
  • Document all activity on the daily log.
  • Complete detailed incident reports as needed or required depending on the severity of the situations.
  • Enforce all parking and moving vehicle regulations.
  • Provide medical services and support to the campus community.
  • Maintain the safety of the campus by investigating fire alarms or intrusion alarms.
  • Offer general escort services, while also providing medical escorts, as necessary.
  • Provide rekey/recore assistance to resident hall entry doors on an emergency basis when necessary.
  • Answer maintenance calls after hours and holidays.
  • Assist in Environmental Health & Safety calls for service.
  • Maintain crime prevention education.
  • Assist the Facilities department with emergency repairs; maintain knowledge of buildings' heating, electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Report to work during college closures as scheduled.
