About The Position

The Division of Campus Community Safety (DCCS) unifies front-line public safety units across the University for a holistic approach to campus community safety, innovation in approaches, and clarity in leadership responsibility and accountability. Key units include UW Emergency Management, SafeCampus and the UW Police Department Seattle campus. Division staff work daily in partnership with units across and outside the UW system to both create safer, welcoming campus environments; prepare for potential natural or human-made disasters; and respond appropriately to incidents. Safeguarding the academic community with P.R.I.D.E. The University of Washington Police Department (UWPD) has the exclusive responsibility to act upon law-enforcement matters and perform police functions for the Seattle Campus of the University of Washington, 24 hours a day. Police Officers at the UWPD respond to public calls for service within a very diverse community, providing community-oriented law enforcement services to the campus and nearby areas, enforcing state laws, city ordinances, and University regulations. Police Officers conduct criminal and traffic investigations, make arrests, prepare necessary documentation, and testify in court. Officers also provide for the safety and security of persons and property at University events and attend community meetings. The University of Washington Police Department is housed in a state-of-the-art police facility. We are looking for dedicated professionals with police experience to join our ranks. Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent
  • Possession of a valid driver's license
  • Two years of work experience as a campus police officer or equivalent
  • No previous felony convictions.
  • U.S. citizenship may be required.
  • Lateral candidates must have a minimum of two years’ experience as a full time, paid commissioned Sergeant, and no more than a 24-month break in service; more than a 24-month break in service will require successful completion of the Washington State Equivalency course.
  • Must be a commissioned State of Washington law enforcement officer or have the ability to become commissioned within 12 months of employment.
  • Knowledge of the principles and procedures of modern police science and administration.
  • Knowledge of all applicable local, state, and federal laws and court decisions.
  • Knowledge in research, developing and writing police policies.
  • Ability to successfully communicate and work with citizens and coworkers with diverse backgrounds, goals, and agendas.
  • Possess and demonstrate integrity and high personal standards of conduct.
  • Ability to prepare and effectively present both oral and written information concerning the activities and operations within the department.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality on sensitive cases and/or projects.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, university officials, other governmental authorities, the media, and the public.
  • Proficient in the use of computers, applicable software, emailing, and scheduling programs.
  • Flexible and available to work evenings, weekends, holidays as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Perform patrol duties of the police sergeant.
  • Be responsible for supervising a squad of police officers, security staff or any other supervisory role at the discretion of the Chief of Police or his designee. Incumbents have arrest powers and are required to be commissioned law officers under the regulations of the State of Washington.
  • Assign duties; train and supervise campus police officers assigned to a shift or squad; advise, counsel, and recommend disciplinary and other personnel actions.
  • Evaluate performance of subordinates to determine training requirements and deficiencies.
  • Assist in development and conduct of training programs for campus police.
  • Investigate complaints of disturbance, accidents, stolen property, or criminal activity; conduct internal investigations as assigned.
  • Patrol campus buildings and grounds on foot or by vehicle to maintain security.
  • Issue citations for violations of campus regulations, local, state, and federal laws.
  • Write reports covering the activity of squad or shift assigned, review and correct reports of subordinate officers.
  • May perform duties of other Sergeant positions as needed.
