About The Position

The Campus Police Officer supports Fairmont State University by establishing and maintaining a safe atmosphere for the faculty, staff, students, and visitors by providing police and security services. The officer patrols the campus in a vehicle and on foot daily and during special events, enforcing all laws, regulations, and policies as needed. The officer works independently on a day-to-day basis under the supervision of a supervisor, but has the ability to deal with unusual situations as needed.

Requirements

• High School diploma or G.E.D. certificate
• Valid WV Driver's License
• No experience or up to 6 months of experience; however, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience is acceptable which provides an applicant the listed knowledge, skills, and abilities and the capacity to perform the essential functions of the job.

Nice To Haves

• West Virginia Law Enforcement Officer certification preferred, but not required
• Associate or Bachelor degree in Criminal Justice
• Enroll in a Police Academy program upon hiring

Responsibilities

• Serves as a preliminary and follow-up investigator
• Patrols campus checking buildings and infrastructure for security issues and deficiencies which make the institution vulnerable to criminal acts
• Patrols during special events, such as athletic events, concerts, etc.
• Directs traffic before, during and after the events
• Provides crowd control which can include managing large numbers of people
• Enforces all Federal, State, and Local laws, ordinances, and University regulations and policies
• Enforces campus parking and traffic regulations
• Makes arrests in accordance with departmental policies
• Investigates traffic-related and general complaints
• Testifies in court as needed
• Watches for hazards and other dangerous or damaging situations
• Administers first aid and provides or arranges necessary transportation
• Provides police escorts as needed to protect property or people
• Assists with the Fairmont State University Police Academy as needed
• Performs related duties as assigned or as directed
