About The Position

The ACLU of Utah is accepting applications for a paid summer intern in the Campaigns Department. The Campaigns Department of the ACLU of Utah works to protect and advance civil rights and liberties across the state through public education, community engagement, and political advocacy. Our team collaborates with diverse coalitions and stakeholders to drive systemic changes. Internship Duration: Internships are 12 weeks, with the possibility of an extension into the fall semester. Summer interns are expected to start mid-May. Rate of Pay: An hourly wage is available to students who can commit to working 30-40 hours per week for 12 weeks during the summer. Students who receive outside funding may be eligible for a partial stipend. ​​​​​​​Undergraduate students will be eligible for a rate of $19 per hour Graduate students will be eligible for a rate of $21.88 per hour Location: The internship will be hybrid, with remote and in-person work required. All interns must be located in Utah for the entire duration of their internship. Hours: General work hours are 9am - 5pm Monday-Friday. Due to the nature of the Campaigns team work in the community, interns will at times be expected to work evenings and weekends as part of the 30-40 hour work week. Travel: Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required to travel around Salt Lake and neighboring counties with mileage reimbursement. Must be able to independently transport a significant amount of tabling and event-related materials. Occasional ability to travel long distances across Utah with mileage reimbursement and/or a rental vehicle required. Other: May occasionally lift and carry up to 25 pounds.

Requirements

  • This internship is open to undergraduate and graduate students who will have completed at least one year of school before the internship commences.
  • Strong writing, research, and communication skills
  • Ability to convey information to public audiences
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Initiative to see projects through to completion
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized focus
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • A deep interest in issues related to civil rights and civil liberties including but not limited to voting rights, immigrants’ rights, LGBTQ+ issues, free speech, indigenous justice, disability rights, and reproductive health
  • Strong understanding of civil liberties, civil rights, and social justice issues
  • Commitment to the mission of the ACLU of Utah
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required to travel around Salt Lake and neighboring counties with mileage reimbursement.

Responsibilities

  • Planning and executing public-facing programs on ACLU of Utah priority issue areas
  • Designing and implementing education or advocacy programs for targeted audiences
  • Creating accessible print and digital media content on local, state, or federal laws and policy for education and advocacy purposes
  • Conducting background, investigative, or policy research
  • Drafting educational materials, one-pagers, or other summary documents
  • Supporting volunteer trainings and public outreach on behalf of the ACLU of Utah
  • Staffing tabling events
  • Attending team calls and meetings
  • Attending external coalition meetings
  • Other projects or administrative work as assigned
