About The Position

Specialists run the specialized programs that are part of the camp experience. The STEM Specialist is responsible for creating and implementing science, technology, engineering, and math activities for their designated specialty area. This position works with campers ages 4-21 with all abilities.

Requirements

  • Experience in teaching or leading STEM programs, with the ability to explain concepts and facilitate hands-on experiments and activities.
  • Ability to set up and manage STEM equipment and supplies, such as computers, robots, circuits, and experiment materials.
  • Physical ability to participate in and supervise STEM activities, including setup and cleanup of equipment and supplies.
  • Prior experience working with school-aged campers of all abilities.
  • Ability to adapt all planned activities to include campers with disabilities.
  • Strong written and spoken language skills.
  • Be accepting of, and sensitive to the diverse racial, national, sexual orientation, gender identity, abilities, religious and cultural backgrounds of everyone at Lessans Camp JCC.
  • Willingness to be flexible and adapt to changes in schedule, responsibilities, and Lessans Camp JCC activities as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Background in STEM fields or education, such as coding, robotics, engineering, or science, preferred.
  • College credits/degree preferred.
  • Priority will be given to candidates who are available the entire camp season starting on June 15 going through August 7.

Responsibilities

  • Design, lead, and oversee the STEM specialty program, developing engaging, hands-on activities and experiments that promote creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving for campers of all ages.
  • Facilitate STEM challenges, experiments, and projects.
  • Mentor and coach counselors and campers, fostering curiosity, innovation, and teamwork through STEM activities and group projects.
  • Supervise and delegate tasks to counselors, such as preparing materials, setting up activity stations, assisting with experiments, managing camper transitions, and ensuring proper safety during all activities.
  • Work with Lessans Camp JCC Leadership to plan and implement camp -wide special events and activities.
  • Supervise and engage with all participants (ages 4-21) in programs and activities while under the position’s care.
  • Substitute for absent counselors as needed and requested.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of campers served, interact appropriately with campers in a variety of situations, appropriately model behavior, enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control and use positive behavior-management techniques.
  • Work with the Adaptive Recreation Coordinator to ensure activities are accessible.
  • Submit written activity plans, including two days of rainy day/absent plans & supplies lists to the Associate Camp Director.
  • Meet with Associate Camp Director weekly.
  • Assist with arrival and dismissal as scheduled.
