About The Position

Camp Counselors for Overnight Camp, Day Camp, Retreats or Mini Camp Programs work with and closely supervise children and adults attending Camp Royall programs autism. Counselors will learn and apply strategies for developing positive relationships with campers with autism and ensuring that our campers- and you! - have a great experience! Essential Duties and Responsibilities Participate in pre-camp staff training, and required meetings throughout program. Become familiar with and implement Camp policies, procedures, and philosophy and learn the role of the camp counselor. Assume full responsibility for and supervision of 1 to 3 campers each day. Familiarize self with campers' needs prior to camper arrival through review of relevant information available and discussion with management staff Maintain positive communication with camper and camper families/caregivers. Provide appropriate supervision and instruction to each camper in all settings and activities. Implement behavior management strategies according to the guidelines stated in Staff training. Assist and supervise campers in all aspects of personal care, including dressing, hygiene, toileting (as needed), and any other areas of daily living. Monitor campers for health, safety and well-being Write weekly reports of each camper’s activities to be sent home with parents.

Requirements

  • Residential (overnight) Counselors must be 18 at the start of employment.
  • Day Counselors must be 17 years of age at the start of employment and will commute daily to work.
  • Demonstrate a desire and ability to learn and be taught about autism and approaches for managing the challenges associated with it.
  • Must also be: Physically able and willing to maintain constant supervision of campers and to fulfill all responsibilities fully.
  • Patient, energetic, fun-loving, and hard-working – and a great sense of humor!
  • Willing and able to put the needs of others before your own.
  • Flexible and able to work well with others, maintain open and effective communication.
  • Accepting and respectful of those who think, behave, and interact differently
