About The Position

This position is responsible for: Plans, directs, facilitates, coordinates, and monitors the day-to-day medical needs of camp staff and campers; reviews medical information and stays abreast of techniques and medical information needed to maintain a healthy environment; offers medical advice to the staff and campers as needed; dispenses medications to staff and campers as needed according to the physician’s prescription. Supervises nursing staff activities and ensures compliance with established policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid.
  • Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Ability to meet attendance requirements.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.
  • Ability to conduct examinations of campers and staff.
  • Some physical requirements of the Camp Nurse position include endurance, such as climbing, standing, bending, stooping, and stretching.
  • Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity are required to manipulate nursing equipment and perform various activities.
  • Requires a normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs, and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Have a willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering a program at the available facility.
  • Operate in daily exposure to the sun, heat, and varying environmental conditions.
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) degree required and Four years of progressively responsible experience supervising nursing activities, preferably in a camp, school, or related environment, preferred
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification
  • Valid State Driver’s License
  • Current State License as RN or LPN (state-based on camp location).

Responsibilities

  • Provides or ensures orientation is provided that includes standing orders, clinic hours, specific camper health and social needs, health center procedures, emergency procedures, growth and development of age groups, staff health assessment of campers, police and contacting parents, transportation to outside health facilities, accident prevention and risk management, nutrition, and first aid in the camp setting.
  • Be on call for all camp medical emergencies.
  • Evaluates campers and staff and determines appropriate treatment based on symptoms
