The Camp Lead at the Boroughs Family Branch YMCA maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals, promotes the potential of all youth, and provides a quality experience to both youth and their families. Under the supervision of the Camp Director and Assistant Camp Director, the Camp Lead is responsible for helping to plan and implement camp program, identify and meet camper needs, lead and support camp groups as needed, while maintaining YMCA day camp standards and DPH standards. Camp will run from Monday, June 15th to Friday, August 21 from 7:30am-5:30pm w/ weekly Thursday night Staff Meetings at 5:30pm Mandatory Full-Day Camp Training dates (subject to change): May 30th, May 31st, June 6th and June 7th

Requirements

  • Current CPR, AED and First Aid Certifications or able to get certified through the Y
  • Desire and Ability to work with children indoors, outdoors, and in the pools.
  • Ability to assist in teaching an activity.
  • Ability to relate to one’s peer group.
  • Good character, integrity, and adaptability
  • Have reliable transportation to get to camp on time on a regular basis.
  • Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control
  • Able to attend camp trainings
  • At least 18 years of age

Responsibilities

  • Accept and demonstrate the positive values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.
  • Work with Camp Director and Assistant Camp Director before camp opening to set up camp program areas and the program for campers.
  • Attend and participate in staff trainings and meetings.
  • Keep daily attendance records of campers in assigned groups
  • Make sure the Counselors working in your specific group maintain camp area in an orderly fashion and keep free of trash and garbage.
  • Remain in camp until the last camper is gone.
  • Assist in nature walks, art/crafts, and other activities as needed by counselors in your group.
  • Know the whereabouts of all campers in the group at all times.
  • Observe and enforce all safety regulations.
  • Recognize and respond to opportunities for problem solving in the group.
  • Develop opportunities for interaction between campers and staff.
  • Provide opportunities for discussion of individual or group/staff problems or concerns.
  • Make sure the Counselors Instruct campers in emergency procedures such as fire drills, missing child drills, etc.
  • Make sure the Counselors are setting a good example for campers and others including cleanliness, punctuality, sharing, clean up, chores and sportsmanship.
  • Encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment and facilities.
  • Maintain good public relations with camper’s parents/guardians.
  • Submit all required reports on time.
  • Be the Liaison for the morning and afternoon drop-off and pick-up of campers.
  • Administer first-aid and CPR as necessary.
  • Evaluate current season and make suggestions for following season.
  • Assist in making sure the Counselors are storing all materials and supplies at end of day, week and season.
  • Support the mission of the YMCA of Central Massachusetts.
  • Attend all camp trainings
  • Facilitate parts of camp trainings
  • Ability to work 7:30-5:30 as needed
  • Ability to go on field trips as needed
  • Be able to commit to a minimum of 8 Full Weeks, Monday-Friday, 7:30-5:30pm of Camp as needed. Time off must be approved prior to hiring
  • Be able to do Sign In or Out consistently everyday as assigned
  • Lead staff meeting breakouts weekly
  • Respond promptly to behavior issues within age section
  • Respond promptly to medical issues
  • Supervise staff in age section
  • Supervise outdoor pool when age section is swimming
  • Ensure that all staff are swimming
  • Assist counselors in parent communication
  • Implement Friday Theme Day activities
  • Assist with Pizza Friday
  • Implement Family Night including set up and take down
  • Foster a positive work environment for all staff
  • Report any issues to Larry and Rosie right away
  • Assist in curriculum planning
  • Plan Friday Theme Day activities
  • Plan Family Night
  • Attend Camp Open House if available
