About The Position

The Camp Chef is responsible for preparing and serving meals for campers and staff in the camp kitchen setting. They ensure meals are nutritious, delicious, and accommodate dietary needs while maintaining food safety standards. The Camp Chef also manages kitchen supplies, oversees food storage, and may supervise kitchen staff or volunteers. Some programs/events will require staff to stay overnight, in this case, staff will be provided on-site accommodation if needed. GSGLA Lakota Overnight Camp The Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles Camp Lakota is a state of the art, recently updated residential camp. Located just 90 miles from downtown Los Angeles, this premier camp site will host a full summer camp season. The camp will focus on providing a stand-out girl-led experience for campers of all ages and communities across our 6,272 square mile footprint. The camp offers a variety of specialty activities including a high ropes challenge course, horseback riding, swimming, and archery.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or be a high school graduate by the start of camp
  • Must hold a valid ServSafe Food Handler certificate.
  • Knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and kitchen safety practices in compliance with state and local health regulations
  • Understanding of basic nutrition and meal planning for children and staff in an overnight camp setting
  • Knowledge of food allergies, dietary restrictions, and special diets (e.g., vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free)
  • Ability to prepare, cook, and serve large-quantity meals efficiently and on schedule
  • Skill in following menus, recipes, portion guidelines, and adapting meals as needed
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills in a fast-paced, residential camp environment
  • Ability to maintain a clean, safe, and orderly kitchen and dining area
  • Skill in proper food storage, labeling, temperature control, and basic inventory management
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills to work with camp leadership, counselors, and support staff
  • Dependability and flexibility to work an as-needed schedule, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and overnight shifts
  • Ability to adapt to changing schedules, group sizes, and dietary needs
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift/move kitchen equipment and supplies (typically up to 40–50 pounds)
  • Ability to maintain a professional, positive attitude while working in a residential environment with children
  • Ability to follow camp policies, procedures, and emergency protocols
  • Comply with state-mandated reporter training
  • Attend GSGLA signature events and/or other activities as assigned
  • Must successfully complete a Live Scan and background check

  • Documented experienced teaching or interacting in youth programming
  • Experience working in an organized school or camp kitchen.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers during programs/events to meet the intended outcomes.
  • Apply basic youth development principles in working with participants through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth.
  • Assure participants are always properly supervised.
  • Be aware of and implement safety guidelines.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of program activities within the mission and outcomes.
  • Responsible for leading and assisting with the teaching of activities.
  • Actively participate in all program areas as assigned.
  • Provide for the progression of activities within the framework of individual and group interests and abilities.
  • Act as a lead in programming areas such as archery, rock wall climbing, challenge course, and all camp activities, when needed.
  • Be a role model to participants and staff in your attitude and behavior.
  • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
  • Set a good example to participants and others regarding general operational procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
  • Prepare and cook nutritious, high-quality meals for campers and staff in accordance with camp menus, dietary guidelines, and food safety standards
  • Support kitchen operations on an as-needed basis, including coverage during staff absences, special events, or peak camp periods
  • Accommodate dietary restrictions and allergies (including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and allergy-safe meals) with care and accuracy
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen environment in compliance with local health regulations and camp policies
  • Follow proper food handling, storage, and temperature control procedures at all times
  • Collaborate with the Food Service Director and camp leadership to ensure smooth meal service and positive camper experience
  • Assist with meal planning, food prep, and inventory management as assigned
  • Supervise and/or work alongside kitchen assistants or volunteers when needed
  • Model professionalism, teamwork, and a positive attitude consistent with camp values
  • Support special meals, theme days, or camp events as requested
  • Other duties as assigned.
