About The Position

This position is responsible for: Training and supervising an assigned group of camp counselors. Plans, coordinates, and directs counselors' functions within the camping program. Ensures the quality of programs and safety of counselors and youth at all times during camp. Provides guidance and role modeling to counselors and ensures the safety and positive experience of counselors and campers. Plans, implements, coordinates, and supervises an assigned group of children and youth participating in a Christian Camp. Ensures compliance with camp rules and regulations at all times. Provides faith-based guidance and role modeling to campers. Participates alongside campers during camp worship meetings and times of prayer. Leads devotional activities and faith-based songs with campers and supports the seeker’s ministry. Incumbent also functions as a music instructor to assist and support the musical component of the Music Conservatory program.

Requirements

  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid.
  • Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
  • Some physical requirements of the Camp Head Counselor position include endurance, including climbing, standing, bending, stooping, and stretching.
  • Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity are required for manipulating activities.
  • Requires a normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs, and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Have a willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering a program in the facility available.
  • Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat and varying environmental conditions.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification

Nice To Haves

  • Six months of experience teaching child development or youth programs in a church is preferred, and
  • Six months’ experience teaching music, with the ability to play and teach lessons in a classroom setting involving more than one student preferred
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates Christ-like care and will be responsible for praying with campers, encouraging them spiritually, and guiding them in their Christian walk.
  • While on duty, staff members conducting these ministerial responsibilities must ensure that their words, actions, and behavior align with the doctrines and theology of The Salvation Army.
  • Supervises and organizes an assigned group of Camp Counselors during scheduled and unscheduled blocks of time in cooperation with camp rules and regulations.
  • Provides spiritual guidance and encouragement to counselors.
  • Trains Counselors in proper methods of leading groups of campers; answers questions during camp and follows up to ensure understanding of training.
  • Provides quality music instruction to campers.
