About The Position

Wellfleet Bay Nature Camp is seeking individuals to foster experiential nature-based environmental learning for campers. We aim to promote positive youth development, stewardship for the environment, and a respectful and inclusive safe space for all our campers. Environmental Educators will primarily be working with children ages 9-13 (upper elementary and middle school grades) and will guide their group in off-site trips and hands-on science-based activities. Field trips will consist of various aquatic activities and may include boating, snorkeling, kayaking, or paddleboarding.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Experience teaching science or nature-based education programs for children ages 9-13
  • Hold current First Aid and CPR certifications or participate in Mass Audubon provided training to obtain certification prior to the beginning of camp
  • Willing to be outdoors for several hours per day in most weather conditions
  • Ability to physically access sanctuary terrain and trails easily by foot
  • Ability to effectively interact with others, including co-teachers and children in camp’s youth-centered environment
  • Hold current Lifeguard certification or be willing to obtain prior to the start of camp
  • Comfortable with watercraft activities, such as kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, snorkeling, and/or boating
  • Provide documented proof of immunity or vaccination record as mandated by MA DPH; complete camp health form and waiver
  • Ability to adapt to changes in schedule and work assignment
  • Must hold current and valid driver's license

Nice To Haves

  • Strong interest or related education experience in Environmental Studies, Biology, Conservation Science, Education, or related fields
  • Familiarity with regional Cape Cod natural history and coastal wetland habitats including salt marsh, tidal flats, and marine ecosystems wildlife.
  • Experience with group and behavior management

Responsibilities

  • Lead a group of children through various habitat explorations including; salt marsh, tidal flats, forests, field and fresh-water wetlands both on Sanctuary grounds and off-site field trips
  • Develop, plan, and implement age-appropriate nature-based and environmental science lessons/daily activities for children in both indoor and outdoor applications
  • Regularly inspect, maintain, and alert leadership staff of any issues or needs for education program equipment, supplies, and/or materials
  • Create and maintain a physically and emotionally safe environment for all campers
  • Act as a role model to both campers and colleagues
  • Assist in cleanup/organization of program materials at the end of each day
  • Provide behavioral support and guidance to Counselors in Training (CITs) as needed
  • Willing and able to drive campers off-site in 12 passenger vans
