About The Position

Performs all duties in accordance with prescribed regulatory compliance guidelines as well as American Camp Association accreditation standards. Maintains awareness of the dining area to ensure safety, fire, and health policies and procedures are observed at all times; reports any deviation to the Camp Dining Hall Supervisor. Maintains personal hygiene according to health regulations (e.g., washing hands, wearing hair back, closed-toe shoes, etc.); duties include setting tables, serving on the food line at all meals, cleaning the dining room, bathrooms, and surrounding areas. Cleaning of the dining hall includes sweeping, mopping, polishing, and waxing the floors in the kitchen and dining room. Ensures the cleanliness of the tables, chairs, condiment holders, refrigerators, freezers, ice machines, coffee makers, stoves, and ovens. Assists in ensuring that all garbage containers in the kitchen and dining areas are leak-proof, securely covered, and tied when not in use. Coordinates the disposal of trash and recyclables. Maintains inventory, ensuring items are stocked and organized, and advises the Camp Dining Hall supervisor of any necessary supplies. Dining room staff may be asked to assist the cooks. Before Meals Arrives 45 minutes before scheduled mealtime Prepares pre-meal assignments given by the Camp Dining Hall Supervisor Washes hands before serving or putting out food Wears serving gloves at all times while serving food. Wears closed-toe shoes at all times while in the dining room and working. During Meals Serves food as directed by the Camp Dining Hall Supervisor. Passes out milk at the end of the serving line. Attends to the camper’s tables and the drink room as assigned. No sitting, eating, or drinking during camper mealtimes. After Meals Helps with clearing tables. Remove plates, silverware, and any other items that require washing. Take any unopened condiments back into the kitchen and put them away. Wipes off the table and chairs. Sweeps under each table after each meal. After the evening meal, sweep and mop the floor. Resets tables for each meal. Participates enthusiastically as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions. Sits with camper tables during meals and serves as a table monitor when needed. Keeps personal living quarters neat, clean, and ready for inspection. Be available to participate and assist with camp programs and activities as directed by the Camp Director.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of cleaning practices, methods, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of The Salvation Army’s mission, philosophy, culture, and protocol.

  • Ability to assist in the preparation and presentation of meals.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with campers and camp staff.
  • Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
  • Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid
  • Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Six months of experience working in a kitchen preferred.
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Certified in First Aid and CPR
