About The Position

The Camp Counselor position is designed for individuals who are passionate about working with children and contributing to their development. Under the direct supervision of the Camp Director, the Camp Counselor will engage with children, members, and other adults/youth, playing a crucial role in fostering strong character values. The counselor will work cooperatively with fellow employees to achieve the YMCA's goals and objectives, ensuring a safe and nurturing environment for all participants.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years old
  • Must exemplify good moral behavior
  • At least 3 months of experience working or volunteering with children ages 5-17
  • Desire to work with children on a daily basis
  • Current CPR/AED/First Aid/O2 Certification.

Nice To Haves

  • One or more years of college in a related field (e.g., recreation, child development, psychology)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Bilingual - English/Spanish
  • Understanding of the YMCA as a membership organization.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret and administer all policies established by the YMCA to all members, participants, and employees.
  • Supervise a group of children and program activities.
  • Follow all policies, procedures, and standards established by law or the YMCA, including safety and emergency procedures.
  • Nurture children through purposeful programming and plan activities that achieve program goals and outcomes.
  • Create a positive rapport with all youth and model relationship-building skills in interactions.
  • Provide opportunities for youth to lead, problem-solve, and make decisions within the program.
  • Engage in ongoing dialogue with parents and caregivers about their child's needs and progress.
  • Attend and participate in family nights, program activities, staff meetings, and training.
  • Respond appropriately to emergency and non-emergency situations and complete necessary paperwork.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
