About The Position

The Camp Counselor will actively, supervise and engage campers of an assigned camp group of Adventure Camp. A successful candidate will be committed to a child centered approach to youth development with a focus on instilling character development values. In addition, they will support the implementation of enrichment opportunities for campers to support curiosity and discovery each week of camp. To ensure full implementation of Adventure Camp, Camp Counselors are expected to provide a quality experience to staff, children, and parents focusing on the West Cook YMCA core values; Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, and Caring. WEST COOK YMCA ABUSE POLICY The West Cook YMCA will not tolerate the mistreatment or abuse of youth or consumers in its programs. Youth is defined as anyone younger than 18 years of age. Any mistreatment or abuse by a staff member or volunteer will result in corrective action, up to and including termination of employment or volunteer service. All reports of suspicious or inappropriate behavior with youth or an allegation of abuse will be taken seriously. The West Cook YMCA will fully cooperate with authorities to investigate all cases of alleged abuse. All West Cook YMCA staff and volunteers shall cooperate to the fullest extent possible in any external investigation by outside authorities or internal investigation conducted by the West Cook YMCA or persons given investigative authority by the West Cook YMCA. Failure to cooperate fully may be grounds for termination

Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED.
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Previous experience working with children preferably in a day camp setting between the ages of 5-13 years of age required.
  • Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: outdoors, music, drama, S.T.E.M., sports, aquatics, recreational games, etc.
  • Organizational and communication skills appropriate for interacting with both children and adults.
  • Flexibility, with the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Adult and Pediatric CPR, First Aid, AED certification training prior to starting date.
  • Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.

Responsibilities

  • The Camp Counselor will use best practices, guidelines, and methods of youth development in daily work and provides careful, attentive supervision while promoting learning and safety.
  • The Camp Counselor supports a camp environment that invites exploration, curiosity, and discovery through ha “just ask” mindset and participates with an assigned camp group of children.
  • Preparing camp group location and daily activities and collaborating with program staff.
  • Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.
  • Maintain accurate camp records as assigned and according to program requirements.
  • Attend all meetings and trainings.
  • Actively supervises activities at the pool and field trips and maintains a visual of all participants.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of YMCA mission, purpose and goals, childcare policies, and YMCA standards; ensures the program meets the highest standards of excellence.
  • Maintains positive relations with parents and staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of the position
