Provides instruction and/or oversight to camp participants for assigned activity. Teaches the associated knowledge and skills and assists campers in achieving activity goals. Requirements

  • Education Required – At least 16 years of age and enrolled in High School OR High School diploma or equivalent. One year of college coursework or prior camp experience.
  • If providing activity instruction in one of the following areas, the following certifications are required: Archery: Level One USA Archery Training required Canoeing: American Canoe Association Certification required or 5 experience is accepted in lieu of certification Aquatics Director: Red Cross Lifeguard Certification required Lifeguards: Red Cross Lifeguard Certification required and skills test
  • Ability to reside at camp location for the duration of encampment including staff training
  • Ability to communicate and work with groups participating and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
  • Ability to observe staff and camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid.
  • Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess the ability to maintain constant supervision of campers.

Nice To Haves

  • Work Experience Preferred – Camp counselor or camp instructor experience
  • CPR Certification through Red Cross or American Heart Association
  • OSHA Certification
  • Community Water Safety Certification

Responsibilities

  • Develops and delivers camp programs that are appropriate for the age and ability of campers including writing lesson plans and evaluate camper abilities and success of programs.
  • Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures.
  • Maintain and care for the physical facilities and equipment in assigned program area.
  • Participates enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading assigned areas.
  • Participates as a member of the camp staff to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events and all other camp activities and camp functions.
  • Remains knowledgeable on current federal, state and local laws, accreditation standards or regulatory agency requirements that apply to the assigned area of responsibility and ensures compliance with all such laws, regulations and standards.
