About The Position

Working under the direction of a Caltrans Maintenance Area Superintendent in Special Crews, the incumbent is responsible for the supervision and operation of all Field Maintenance employees and maintenance activities by the assigned unit, and ensures that all Department safety practices are in accordance with District, Department, State and Federal policies, procedures, rules and guidelines. The incumbent is also responsible for inspecting the TBMP (Treatment Best Management Practices) devices and supervising the crew performing the majority of the maintenance and minor repairs of the TBMP devices throughout the district. Possession of a valid Class C driver's license is required. This is a designated travel crew and works out of town on a per diem basis up to 80% of the year. Required to work overtime, nights, and weekends due to storms, emergencies, or special work projects, as determined by the Supervisor or Department. Conducts TBMP inspections in the field throughout the district using a hand-held electronic device. Conducts field inspections of existing TBMP structures and devices during storms and keeps records of the inspections. Documents and prepares TBMP reports, and organizes and maintains the integrity of photos and files collected in the field pertinent to TBMP devices and drainage systems. Identifies the condition of the TBMP on the state highway system with regard to any failure that may cause the TBMP to become non-compliant with the State Water Resources Control Board requirements. Supervises and participates in a wide range of work projects undertaken by the assigned unit. Such projects include, but are not limited to, TBMP inspections, TBMP device maintenance and repairs, rigid pavement maintenance, roadside maintenance, weed control, maintenance of fences, sign replacement and repair, ditches, culverts, litter, debris, sweeping, graffiti, spills, stormwater and NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) projects, rest areas, vista points, median barrier, snow and ice control and storm maintenance. Performs basic, minimal handwork related to TBMP inspection, including the use of small chain saws, hedgers, loppers, picks, grate pullers and other related equipment to gain access openings.
