About The Position

Under the supervision of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, and functional direction of a Caltrans Highway Maintenance Leadworker, the incumbent operates equipment identified as but not limited to: Passenger Vehicles, Mini to 3/4-Ton Pickups, Vans, and 3/4-Ton Utility Bodies;1-Ton and Up trucks including two axle and three axle dump trucks; Construction Equipment: Mowers, Graders, Tractors, Loaders, Excavators, Backhoes, fork lifts; Snow removal specialty equipment: plows, plows with wings and blowers used by assigned unit, and works individually or with a crew performing tasks related to snow removal and highway maintenance work. In his/her absence, a Caltrans Maintenance Leadworker or other qualified person may be in charge. There are times when incumbent may work for other Supervisors and/or work units, as workload requires. Will receive some training from other members of the crew. Requirements

  • The position(s) require(s) a valid California Drivers License (CDL). You must answer the questions addressing your CDL on your application. Ensure you provide your CDL number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions.
  • The position(s) require(s) a Drug Screening be passed prior to being hired.
  • The position(s) require(s) a valid unrestricted Class A commercial driver's license, with Tank Vehicle (N) endorsement.

Responsibilities

  • Operate snow removal equipment including trucks with plows and or sanders, motor graders, loaders, and rotary snow blowers.
  • Operating and manning chain control and road closures, directing traffic and proper placement of warning / detour signs.
  • Assisting in all aspects of slide removal (both manual and mechanical).
  • Assignments will include but not be limited to: paving, sign/fence/guardrail repair, culvert cleaning, removing litter, roadside rest area and other duties that would normally be assigned to a Caltrans Equipment Operator I, Highway Maintenance Worker or Landscape Maintenance Worker.
  • Duties would include irrigation repair, chemical spraying and Landscape duties.
  • Person is responsible for servicing, minor adjustments, emergency repairs.
  • Cleaning of equipment and completing all pertinent records of equipment.
  • Work on special projects such as assisting in blasting operations, using rock drills and jackhammers, fabricating tire chains, and setting up emergency traffic controls for accidents and hazardous spills and other duties/incidents as required.
  • Crew report forms, pre and post operative equipment checks, fuel purchases/usage, Material usage reports.
