About The Position

The Manufacturing Engineering Intern – Facility Layout & CAD Documentation will create comprehensive AutoCAD factory layout drawings for Proterra’s battery pack manufacturing facility. This internship provides hands-on experience in manufacturing engineering, CAD documentation, and facility planning while delivering a critical tool for ongoing facility management and capital project planning. The intern will conduct on-site surveys, measure and document equipment locations, and produce professional as-built drawings that the Manufacturing Engineering team can maintain and update as the facility evolves.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related engineering discipline
  • Experience or coursework using AutoCAD or similar CAD software
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to produce accurate technical documentation
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and layouts
  • Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment and performing on-site measurements
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with cross-functional teams

Nice To Haves

  • Prior internship, co-op, or project experience in manufacturing, facilities, or industrial engineering
  • Familiarity with factory layouts, material flow, or production systems
  • Experience with CAD standards, layer management, or revision control systems

Responsibilities

  • Conduct site surveys of the manufacturing facility to verify equipment placement, dimensions, and spatial relationships
  • Measure and document production equipment, material handling systems, and building infrastructure
  • Develop complete as-built AutoCAD drawings, including: Full facility floor plans with accurate dimensions and locations Production equipment layouts Material flow paths Utility connections (electrical, compressed air, water, data) Safety zones and building infrastructure elements
  • Create and maintain a standardized AutoCAD layer structure for equipment, utilities, building elements, and material handling systems, following industry best practices and internal documentation standards
  • Develop a custom symbol library and legend for consistent equipment representation
  • Implement professional title blocks and a revision control framework to support ongoing document management
  • Compile a complete documentation package, including: PDF versions of all drawings A user guide explaining layer structure, naming conventions, and standards Instructions for maintaining and updating drawings using standard AutoCAD tools
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering, Facilities, and Operations teams to validate layouts and ensure accuracy
  • Document assumptions, findings, and recommendations clearly for long-term usability
