MEANINGFUL WORK AND PERSONAL IMPACT The Cable Technician is responsible for surveying telecommunications rooms, assessing the condition and configuration of existing cable infrastructure, and identifying available spare copper pairs and fiber strands. The role includes documenting cabling routes, providing recommendations for additional cabling or equipment removal, and verifying that rooms meet firestopping and cleanliness requirements. The technician will install and document new and updated Inside Plant (ISP) infrastructure, including conduit, cable trays, copper, coax, and fiber systems across Pentagon, Mark Center, and NCR-supported facilities.

Requirements

  • 3 + years of related experience
  • US Citizenship Required: Yes
  • Skills: Cat6 Cabling, Coaxial Cabling, Inside Plant, Network Cabling, Structured Cabling
  • Clearance Level Must Currently Possess: Top Secret
  • Clearance Level Must Be Able to Obtain: Top Secret
  • High School Diploma and related technical field, or equivalent combination of education, technical training, and work experience.
  • 3–5 years of telecommunications-related experience.
  • Active Secret Clearance.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with personnel at varying technical levels.
  • Effective problem analysis and problem-solving abilities.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work in telecommunications rooms, mechanical spaces, and secure environments.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and maneuver equipment as needed.
  • Ability to climb ladders and operate standard power tools safely.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong customer service experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of BICSI rules, regulations, and standards.
  • Strong customer support skills in a high-visibility environment.

Responsibilities

  • Survey telecommunications rooms to determine existing installations and infrastructure status.
  • Identify available spare copper pairs and fiber strands.
  • Document routing of connected house pairs and fiber pairs/strands.
  • Recommend new cable installations or removal of unused equipment as needed.
  • Inspect rooms for proper firestopping and coordinate removal of debris or abandoned materials.
  • Install and document ISP infrastructure, including conduit, cable trays, copper, coax, and fiber cabling.
  • Follow JSP and commercial industry best practices for installation, rack wiring, and testing procedures.
  • Perform service order and repair activities involving CAT6, VoIP, and fiber optic cabling.
  • Install, maintain, and repair voice and data communication systems.
  • Interpret service orders, circuit diagrams, and electrical schematics.
  • Test, locate, install, and repair cabling infrastructure and perform routine maintenance tasks.
  • Verify work order details, required materials, and completed installations.
  • Conduct service verification tests and escalate issues when necessary.
  • Use network test equipment including network testers, copper testers, fiber OTDRs, and power meters.
  • Document cable routing, labeling, configuration diagrams, and system specifications.
  • Troubleshoot outages, test backup procedures, and update network documentation.
  • Maintain current knowledge of assigned technologies and participate in special projects.
  • Identify, track, and remove abandoned cable; ensure cable bundles meet safety and organizational standards.
  • Work safely with power tools and ladders; collaborate effectively with supervisors and team members.
