About The Position

Saint John's Abbey Woodworking invites applications for the full-time, benefit eligible position of Cabinet/Furniture Maker. The Cabinet/Furniture Maker is under the supervision of the Lead Woodworker of Saint John's Abbey Woodworking. This position is responsible for performing work requiring skill in the trade of a Cabinet/Furniture Maker including handling rough lumber through final preparation of furniture items for finishing. Saint John's Abbey Woodworking, located on the campus of Saint John's University, has been handcrafting wood from its own forest into custom and production furniture for over 150 years. We are a community of craftsmen who take pride in our work, and are currently seeking woodworkers who are able to approach their own work with creativity and tradition.

Requirements

  • High school graduation required.
  • Vocational training in Cabinet/Furniture Making and/or experience in production shop or construction.
  • Knowledge of wood species and their properties
  • Knowledge of hardware and products used in furniture and cabinet construction.
  • Ability to work within a team atmosphere of students, faculty, shop employees, and volunteers.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently
  • Ability to make accurate decisions in a timely manner and move to execute those decisions.
  • A willingness to maintain a high level of competence. Discreet judgment and confidentiality are expected at this level of responsibility.
  • Excellent customer relation skills.
  • Ability to understand and complete safety training and operations instructions for all aspects of shop operations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all duties peculiar to, and normally required, in the trades of furniture and cabinet making, following recognized procedures and techniques for such work.
  • Coordinate with the Lead Woodworker for the measuring, design, manufacture and installation of custom furniture and cabinet needs.
  • Familiarity and proficiency with power and non-power hand tools, as well as planers, jointers, table saws, drill presses, shapers, and other large power shop equipment.
  • Other duties as needed or assigned.
