BYU Online High School Counselor The BYU Online High School (BYU OHS) school counselor reports directly to and works closely with the BYU High School Online Learning Education Service Agency (ESA) school counselor (Lead School Counselor). Under the direction of the Lead School Counselor, the BYU OHS school counselor oversees the school’s academic advising and counseling, graduation, transcripts and credits, mental health counseling referrals, College and Career Readiness planning, and college application support. The school counselor supervises student progress, and coordinates student academic planning with teachers and Parents. The school counselor works with students and school staff to provide access to and help communicate about additional educational resources and other support available. Note: This is a part-time position (28) hours per week. This position follows a hybrid work model, with time split between in-office and remote work.

Requirements

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU
  • Master’s degree in school counseling or a related field
  • Licensed School Counselor in Utah
  • Experience advising and supporting high school students and middle school students
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills; detail-oriented and tech-savvy (including Microsoft Office)
  • Ability to support students and families with professionalism, sensitivity, and a positive attitude
  • Knowledge of (or willingness to learn) graduation requirements, FERPA, accommodations, and NCAA eligibility

Responsibilities

  • Support Students and Families
  • Help students and parents create four-year academic plans (including accommodations when needed)
  • Assist with class selection, tutoring, tech support, and letters of recommendation
  • Monitor student progress and offer support if they’re struggling academically or emotionally
  • Work with the school team to support students with academic, attendance, or behavioral challenges
  • Ensure students meet graduation requirements
  • Guide students through college, scholarship, and financial aid applications
  • Maintain Records and Ensure Compliance
  • Review and process transcripts
  • Audit and manage student records
  • Assist with official documentation under Lead Counselor supervision
  • Admissions Support
  • Evaluate transfer and international credits (e.g., TEC or IERF) under Lead Counselor supervisor
  • Team Collaboration & School Planning
  • Help improve school programs and student outcomes
  • Support academic standards, equity, and student success
  • Update newsletters, brochures, and websites with current info
  • Assist in delivering a College & Career Readiness Counseling Program
