About The Position

Cole Family Monarch Conservation Center and Butterfly House Attendant Job Location Greensboro Science Center - Greensboro, NC Position Type Part-time, Seasonal Salary Range $10.66/hour Butterfly House Attendants create memorable moments for guests of all ages by facilitating informal educational programming in our Butterfly House. Attendants will assist with aspects affiliated with the operations of the Butterfly House including, but not limited to, animal maintenance and husbandry, garden maintenance, record-keeping. This is a flexible schedule for around 25 hours per week and requires weekend availability. The butterfly house attendants work within the Education Department and report to the Butterfly House Supervisor.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years’ old
  • Pass a background check
  • Required to walk, sit, and stand for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work outdoors for various lengths of time under a variety of conditions including hot temperatures, high humidity, and exposure to various plants and animals
  • Be able to climb stairs, lift, carry, and move up to 30 pounds
  • Safely and comfortably navigate uneven surfaces including gravel, grass, hills, and stairs
  • Able to work well with a team
  • Capable of providing leadership and guidance
  • Must have good communications skills
  • Able to lead in stressful situations
  • Good time management skills

  • The successful applicant will have a demonstrated passion and aptitude for working with volunteers of all ages.
  • Candidates should also be well-organized, comfortable speaking to groups, and have a positive, energetic, outgoing demeanor.
  • Candidates must have excellent communication skills with the public and possess great interpersonal skills.
  • Academic experience in the biological sciences is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide a high level of customer service to guests at all times
  • Educate guests regarding butterflies and other pollinators
  • Give clear instructions on how to behave in the Butterfly House
  • Track the number of guests visiting the Butterfly House
  • Assist with day-to-day animal welfare of butterflies This may include daily monitoring and maintenance of exhibit pieces, exhibit cleanliness, implement proper disposal techniques, uphold AZA standards, and follow butterfly house animal policies
  • Assist with butterfly conservation and research
  • Document any problems seen on or near the Butterfly House
  • Dress appropriately for the day's activities and adhere to the GSC dress code
  • Respond to emergency situations in a safe and appropriate manner
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures of the Greensboro Science Center
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Be responsible for the safety of yourself, animals, and guests in the Butterfly House
  • Willing to follow directions from others
