About The Position

The Business Unit Equipment Manager provides strategic and operational leadership for all equipment‑related functions supporting a heavy civil and transportation construction business unit. This role is responsible for maximizing fleet availability, utilization, and return on investment while ensuring safe, compliant, and cost‑effective equipment operations across multiple complex infrastructure projects. The position blends enterprise‑level fleet strategy, financial stewardship, and field execution, overseeing owned and rented equipment, service operations, preventive maintenance programs, and vendor partnerships. The Business Unit Equipment Manager collaborates closely with project leadership, estimating teams, and corporate partners to support successful project delivery and sustained profitability. Requirements

  • 10+ years of heavy equipment management experience in heavy civil or transportation construction.
  • Proven leadership of large, multi‑project fleets and service operations.
  • Strong financial acumen, including budgeting, forecasting, and cost controls.
  • Deep technical knowledge of heavy equipment, cranes, and on‑highway fleets.
  • Experience with ERP systems, fleet management software, and telematics.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Business, Equipment Management, or related field preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license; ability to travel to jobsites and vendors as needed.

  • Certified Equipment Manager (CEM) or similar certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and oversight for all equipment operations supporting multiple heavy civil and transportation projects, including earthmoving, paving, structures, cranes, and specialty equipment.
  • Ensure reliable equipment availability through effective planning, mobilization, preventive maintenance, and repair strategies.
  • Coordinate equipment sourcing, including owned assets, rentals, and specialty packages, to meet project schedules and optimize utilization.
  • Direct equipment service and repair operations to meet manufacturer standards, company policies, and project demands.
  • Maintain equipment life‑cycle strategies, including acquisition, redeployment, refurbishment, and disposition decisions.
  • Develop, manage, and monitor equipment budgets, forecasts, and forecasts for major projects and the business unit.
  • Manage equipment billing, cost recovery, internal rates, and utilization metrics.
  • Evaluate equipment repair vs. replacement decisions using life‑cycle cost analysis and return‑on‑investment principles.
  • Monitor and approve vendor quotes, major component repairs, and capital expenditures.
  • Support estimating teams by establishing competitive, data‑driven equipment pricing for bids and proposals.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop equipment managers, superintendents, mechanics, and support staff.
  • Establish expectations, assign workloads, and manage staffing plans to support operational needs.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Assist in recruiting, performance management, succession planning, and retention of equipment personnel.
  • Develop and maintain strategic relationships with OEMs, dealerships, rental providers, and service vendors.
  • Negotiate pricing, terms, and service agreements with key suppliers (e.g., Caterpillar, Deere, Volvo, Komatsu).
  • Evaluate vendor performance and drive continuous improvement in cost, quality, and response time.
  • Ensure all equipment operations comply with DOT, OSHA, MSHA, and company safety policies.
  • Oversee crane compliance, assembly/disassembly activities, and operator authorizations.
  • Promote a strong safety culture by enforcing standards and proactively addressing risks.
  • Ensure proper documentation, licensing, inspections, and audits are completed accurately and on time.
  • Utilize ERP, telematics, and business intelligence tools to track utilization, costs, downtime, and performance.
  • Implement and improve systems, processes, and procedures that enhance efficiency, transparency, and control.
  • Analyze data to identify trends, opportunities for optimization, and corrective actions.
  • Stay current on industry technology, equipment innovations, and best practices.
