About The Position

The Sales Engineer is a technical partner to our Enterprise and SMB Account Executives. This position will translate customer requirements into the right telecom and internet solutions, build technical confidence with prospects, and support the sales process from discovery through implementation handoff. This role is ideal for someone who can speak “network” and “business” equally well—designing practical solutions while helping the account executives win complex opportunities. Serves as a collaborative member of the sales team to support the marketing and sale of the company’s product lines. Provides customers with insight into current and emerging network solutions. Works closely with sales teams on customer presentations, RFPs, and the technical designs of new opportunities. Integrates an understanding of business objectives and functional priorities while acting as a key contributor in a complex, fast-paced environment. The role requires a positive, team-oriented professional who thrives in an innovative and cohesive workplace.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Telecommunications, or a related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 7+ years of experience in a Sales Engineer, Solutions Engineer, customer-facing Network Engineer, or telecom pre-sales role, with responsibilities aligned to those outlined above.
  • Working knowledge of business telecommunications solutions, including fiber-based internet, Ethernet, DIA, WAN, and voice services.
  • Ability to interpret, explain, and discuss networking concepts such as routing, switching, VLANs, VPNs, firewalls, QoS, redundancy, and uptime/SLAs.
  • Strong customer presence with the ability to lead technical discussions with IT managers, network administrators, and executive-level stakeholders.
  • Proven experience collaborating cross-functionally with engineering, provisioning, operations, and related teams to deliver accurate and scalable solutions.
  • Valid driver’s license with the ability to travel locally for customer meetings, site visits, and community events, as needed.
  • Consultative mindset with strong discovery and needs-assessment skills.
  • Clear and effective written communication skills, including the ability to create diagrams, document assumptions, and produce concise technical summaries.
  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity and managing complex stakeholder groups.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with strong follow-through and accountability.
  • Team-first collaborator who enhances the effectiveness and success of Account Executives.
  • Working knowledge of IP routing protocols (OSPF, BGP, PIM) and technologies including IPv4/IPv6, VoIP, MPLS, Layer 2/Layer 3 VPNs, and Metro Ethernet.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with SD-WAN, managed Wi-Fi, SASE, and security offerings.
  • Familiarity with telecom quoting and serviceability processes, including fiber builds, special construction, and site surveys.
  • Industry certifications such as CCNA, CCNP, Network+, or other relevant vendor-specific certifications.
  • Experience selling into industries such as healthcare, manufacturing, logistics, local government, or multi-site business environments.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with Account Executives on discovery calls to identify technical requirements, current-state environment, constraints, and success criteria.
  • Design and recommend solutions across fiber internet, Ethernet, DIA, WAN, SD-WAN (as applicable), voice, and related business connectivity services.
  • Develop high-quality technical proposals, including network diagrams, architecture overviews, scope, assumptions, and requirements.
  • Support complex deal strategies through technical qualification, solution positioning, risk identification, and competitive differentiation.
  • Lead technical presentations and demonstrations; explain concepts such as redundancy, SLAs, QoS, routing, and security in clear business-focused language.
  • Conduct site surveys and technical assessments to validate feasibility and implementation needs.
  • Serve as the “technical closer” in later-stage opportunities by answering questions, addressing objections, and aligning stakeholders.
  • Attend customer installations as necessary to ensure successful implementation of services ordered.
  • Cultivate local partnerships and organizational affiliations to positively promote and position the United Communications brand within the communities served; actively participate in community events and service opportunities throughout the year.
  • Provide technical support for local events and industry trade shows, as required.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Network Engineering, Construction, Provisioning, and Project/Implementation to confirm serviceability, timelines, and costs.
  • Provide clear handoff documentation to implementation teams, including requirements, configuration details, schematics, key contacts, and milestones.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date Salesforce CRM records, including technical notes, solution summaries, and next steps.
  • Serve as a technical subject-matter expert by contributing to RFP responses and reviewing submissions for technical accuracy and completeness prior to delivery.
  • Create and maintain repeatable pre-sales assets such as standard diagrams, discovery checklists, solution templates, and competitive battlecards.
  • Share feedback with Product and Engineering teams on market needs, feature gaps, and recurring customer objections.
  • Develop and deliver periodic training sessions on networking, technology, and telephony to enhance sales team knowledge and confidence.
