The Office for Research Information Systems (ORIS), a unit of the Office of the Senior Vice President for Research (OSVPR), seeks a Business Intelligence Specialist (BI Specialist) with a strong foundation in data science, statistical analysis, and advanced analytics to strategically design, develop, and maintain business intelligence solutions. Supported solutions include Power BI applications and reports, datasets, web applications, and other products focused on process performance, predictive analytics, and strategic reporting within the research enterprise. The Business Intelligence Specialist will perform the following: Collaborate with stakeholders to understand their data and reporting needs and requirements and translate them into engaging data stories, including requirements and intended deliverables. Apply statistical methods and data science techniques to analyze operational and strategic data, identify trends, and answer critical business questions related to research performance, compliance, and KPIs. Extract and transform data from multiple sources to create efficient data models ready for reporting purposes. Develop visually appealing and effective data visualizations, dashboards, and infographics, to convey complex data in a clear and understandable manner. Work closely with ORIS developers, database administrators, business analysts, and other teams at Penn State to source data for designing visualizations while ensuring the accuracy of data used. Create interactive dashboards that allow end-users to explore data and gain insights through filtering, drill-down, and other interactive features. Conduct ad hoc statistical analysis and reporting to support data-informed decisions. Candidates with an understanding of the research lifecycle, research administration, or research compliance, and experience working with operational/financial data are preferred. The successful candidate will be a champion for data integrity and user experience design and must be able to communicate data analyses and visualizations effectively to executives and non-technical stakeholders. They should have foundational knowledge of data management processes and techniques and a portfolio of well-designed data visualizations. This is a technical role and therefore, experience and comfort with data modeling and visualization are critical. Preferential experience in predictive analytic models and other programming languages, such as R and Python. Proficiency with Microsoft Power BI or similar tools, Excel, and other Microsoft Office tools (PowerApps, PowerQuery) as well as the ability to write SQL queries, is preferred but not required. Experience working in a higher ed environment is a plus.
