About the position

The Bus Monitor is responsible for riding buses and assisting the bus driver to ensure the safe and orderly transportation of students. This role involves maintaining a safe environment on the bus, supervising students, and ensuring compliance with safety procedures. The Bus Monitor will work cooperatively with the driver and assist students with disabilities as needed, including lifting and carrying them when necessary. The position requires effective communication with students, parents, and guardians, as well as the ability to manage student behavior and report any discipline issues to the appropriate administrator. The Bus Monitor must also be familiar with bus routes and assist with pre- and post-inspections of the bus.

Responsibilities

  • Work cooperatively with driver in maintaining safe conditions on the bus.
  • Maintain good rapport with students, parents, and guardians.
  • Assist students on and off the bus according to their individual needs including lifting and carrying students with disabilities.
  • Supervise students as they board and exit the bus and cross the street following established safety procedures.
  • Escort students into the building and deliver to their assigned destination.
  • Instruct students on safe entering, exiting, and riding rules and regulations.
  • Learn and adapt to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
  • Manage student behavior and report student discipline problems in a timely manner to appropriate administrator.
  • Know bus routes to guide substitute drivers.
  • Work irregular hours as needed.
  • Complete and maintain accurate, updated, and timely records and reports including route sheet and daily non-notification forms.
  • Operate equipment according to established safety procedures. Ensure seat belts, harnesses, and/or car seats are used correctly and assist students with safety equipment.
  • Attend all required training as directed.
  • Follow all federal, state, and district emergency procedures.
  • Follow all procedures established by transportation and special education offices.
  • Assist driver with pre- and post-inspections, child check, and cleaning duties.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid Texas driver's license
  • First Aid Certificate
  • CPI Certification
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Ability to understand and follow written or verbal instructions
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others
  • Ability to operate safety equipment and adaptive equipment
  • Ability to manage student behavior
  • Ability to work well with children with disabilities
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and procedure manuals
