About The Position

This monitor works as needed to support bus riders in the Albemarle district. Routes and route times will vary. Bus Aides/Bus Monitors play an integral role in assisting the school bus driver in providing a safe, orderly, and efficient transportation service for students. They support the needs of students during routine activities and emergency situations. Bus Monitors effectively supervise and manage the behavior of students and often provide support for an individual student or group of students with special needs and/or disabilities.

Requirements

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED
  • Experience working with children
  • General knowledge of operating a school bus
  • General knowledge of the geography of the District and the location of streets
  • Skill in the safe operation of a school bus.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Ability to detect malfunctioning equipment.
  • Ability to assist children using patience and understanding.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, associates, students, parents and the general public.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students with special needs including when entering and exiting the bus
  • Ensure the safe and orderly conduct of students on the bus
  • Provide instruction to students regarding proper safety; ensure seat belts are worn
  • Participate in scheduled emergency bus evacuation drills
  • Assist parents and school personnel with safe loading and unloading of students
  • Additional assignments as assigned by the supervisor.
