About The Position

The Bus Monitor is responsible for ensuring the safety and supervision of children during transportation to and from school. This role involves conducting health observations, securing medications, and monitoring children to ensure they are safely secured in their seats. The Bus Monitor also assists the Bus Driver during emergencies, implements bus rules, and engages children in educational activities. Additionally, the position requires communication with parents and staff regarding children's needs and activities.

Requirements

  • Be 18 years of age.
  • High School Diploma or GED (Dependent on each state's childcare licensing requirements).
  • A CDA credential is preferred and/or must enroll in the CDA for classroom coverage.
  • Ability to work irregular and flexible hours.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred - both oral and written.
  • Have dependable transportation to and from work.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with children, especially in a transportation or educational setting.
  • Knowledge of child safety and health regulations.
  • Ability to engage children in educational activities.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily child health observation to determine child health status or injuries for children boarding the bus.
  • Obtain and secure child medications for proper pickup and delivery utilizing safe handling procedures and documenting such activities appropriately.
  • Responsible for the safety and supervision of children during transportation, including securing children in appropriate child safety restraints and monitoring them throughout transportation.
  • Assist Bus Driver during emergencies and evacuation drills and ensure the vehicle is maintained in a sanitary condition.
  • Implement, monitor, and ensure compliance with bus rules during transportation, providing educational activities as part of school readiness efforts.
  • Act as a liaison between parents and center staff regarding center activities, child issues, and upcoming program events.
  • Provide child engagement through activities such as singing, fingerplays, stories, and positive conversations.
  • Ensure that all children are properly released from the school bus to the parent, guardian, or designated person as documented in the child's file.
  • Provide short-term relief to classroom staff while under the supervision of a qualified teacher in the classroom or playground as necessary.
  • Provide interpretation services in the classroom while assisting with coverage, at home visits, and Parent/Teacher conferences as necessary.
  • Assist in fulfilling staff/child ratios in classrooms, kitchen duties, or other areas of the center as assigned.
  • Assist the Bus Driver/Janitor to clean and maintain the building and playground as needed.
  • Transport and assist with supervision of children and parents during parent meetings, field trips, health clinic visits, and as assigned.
  • Participate in trainings for serving children with disabilities or special needs in accordance with the child's IEP and/or IFSP.
  • Assist in ongoing recruitment plan activities, including recruitment of children with disabilities.
  • Provide support or T/TA to other locations (centers) with some travel requirements.
  • Attend all staff meetings and trainings and other program activities as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
