About The Position

The California Rural Indian Health Board, Inc. (CRIHB) is committed to the needs and interests that elevate and promote the health status and social conditions of the Indian people of California. CRIHB does this by providing advocacy, shared resources, training, and technical assistance that enhances the delivery of quality comprehensive health-related services. This position involves working closely with children and parents to ensure safety and compliance with school bus rules, as well as assisting the bus driver in various tasks related to the safe transportation of children.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Typically one year of experience working with groups of preschoolers (ages 3-5)
  • Knowledge of age-appropriate behaviors and safety practices
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Current physical exam and tuberculosis test clearance
  • Criminal background fingerprint clearance
  • Current CPR/First Aid Certification

Responsibilities

  • Instruct children and parents on school bus safety and rules.
  • Assist the Bus Driver with the seating of the children and ensure seat belts are buckled.
  • Monitor children's conduct while on the bus.
  • Assist with field trip supervision of the children.
  • Provide positive structure and safety on the school bus for all students.
  • Attend training workshops on behavior problems and positive discipline techniques.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding Head Start children and program matters.
  • Attend and participate in pre-service and in-service activities.
  • Assist children in boarding and exiting the bus.
  • Help driver complete daily sign on & off sheets, accounting for all children getting on and off the bus.
  • Ensure all children are secured in appropriate seatbelts or restraints.
  • Visually observe the health of each child on the bus.
  • Ensure behavioral issues do not compromise safety or the driver's ability to operate the vehicle.
  • Use age-appropriate communication skills with children on the bus.
  • Collaborate with the bus driver to ensure each child is delivered to a responsible adult upon leaving the bus.
  • Ensure the responsible adult signs for the child upon leaving the bus.
  • Ensure no child is left unattended on the bus.
  • Assist the bus driver with emergency situations following safety rules and regulations.
  • Fill out accident/incident reports as appropriate.
  • Assist driver with keeping the inside of the vehicle clean.
  • Conduct a walkthrough of the bus prior to drop-off to check for children or items left behind.
  • Assist driver with evacuation drills.
  • Assist with paperwork flow between homes and sites.
  • Assist in the classroom during the school day.
  • Maintain positive communications with parents, drivers, and site staff.
