About The Position

The Bus Monitor is responsible for ensuring the safe and orderly transportation of students with disabilities. This role involves riding on the bus, assisting the driver, and managing student behavior to create a safe environment for all passengers. The Bus Monitor will instruct students on safety protocols, supervise their boarding and exiting, and provide assistance as needed. The position requires effective communication and the ability to adapt to the individual needs of students.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Ability to move actively through large numbers of people in a limited amount of space
  • Ability to act responsibly
  • High School Diploma / GED
  • Ability to follow verbal instructions and communicate effectively
  • Ability to complete Monitor Evaluation showing capabilities of fulfilling job description
  • Ability to operate safety equipment and adaptive equipment
  • Ability to work well with children with disabilities
  • Ability to manage student behavior
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others
  • School experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Instruct students on safe entering, exiting, and passenger rules and regulations
  • Supervise students as they board and leave the bus and cross the street
  • Take children into the building and help them find their way
  • Learn and adapt to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs
  • Maintain discipline and use effective behavior management control over groups of students
  • Report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator and communicate with teachers and parents regarding student's behavior when warranted
  • Perform emergency evacuation of students on the bus when the situation warrants it
  • Lift and carry students with disabilities on and off the bus according to their individual needs
  • Become familiar with all routes to and from school campus to be of assistance to the driver
  • Maintain an updated route schedule
  • Supervise use of seatbelts, harnesses, or car seats by students
  • Follow emergency procedures and help the driver administer first aid, if necessary
  • Operate equipment according to established safety procedures
  • Help the driver keep the bus clean
  • Work irregular hours (Split Shift)
  • Perform other duties as assigned
