About The Position

The Lead Bus Mechanic will manage daily operations of the Bus Garage. They will ensure the safety and reliable operation of the school district's transportation fleet by performing skilled maintenance, diagnostic assessments, and repairs on all school buses, corporation vehicles and equipment. Reports To: Director of Transportation

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be able to maintain a CDL DOT physical
  • Acquire and maintain valid class B commercial driver's license for air brake vehicles with passenger and school bus endorsement
  • Must be willing and able to participate in random DOT drug screening
  • Must be able to utilize various software programs
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 35 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to focus.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred at least one-year experience as a school bus mechanic and have completed one summer school bus preparation and inspection with a school corporation
  • Preferred ASE certification

Responsibilities

  • Ability to work independently with knowledge of school bus transportation policies and regulations with specific detail to annual school bus inspection requirements
  • Maintain and preserve the outside of buses and other vehicles
  • Monitor vehicles still in warranty
  • Possess the knowledge and ability to utilize all the various pieces of equipment to perform maintenance on the vehicle fleet
  • Schedule and perform major and minor repairs on all Whitko vehicles and equipment as well as scheduling fleet maintenance and repairs with outside vendors when necessary
  • Direct and perform diagnostic work using laptop computer and various software packages
  • Effective communication via computer, telephone and/or radio to school personnel and outside groups (i.e. state police)
  • Prepare buses to meet safety requirements and pass annual State Police bus inspection
  • Displays strong organizational skills, exercising safety precautions and maintain work area
  • Direct preventive maintenance schedules and perform all duties associated with the preventive maintenance
  • Accurate maintenance records regarding diagnostic work repair/service performed, and part or supplies used. Preparing detailed reports when needed regarding repair history and warranty information
  • Maintain sufficient inventory of parts and supplies to properly maintain all Whitko vehicles
  • Provide and monitor budgetary information as requested by Central Office Personnel and/or Director of Transportation
  • Works with administration, bus drivers and all other staff with professionalism
  • Provide clear expectations regarding the necessary repairs and expected timeline of completion.
  • Road test vehicles, including school buses to ascertain repair effectiveness; perform final inspection upon completion of service/repair prior to release
  • Make service calls or road assistance calls as needed
  • Assist with driving bus routes as needed
  • Assist with snow removal at various Whitko facilities
  • Receive and respond to after hours and early morning calls/message from Transportation Director or staff
  • The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substances abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the corporation
  • Attends in-service or special schooling as required to maintain up-to-date knowledge of diesel engines, gasoline engines, transmission systems, electrical systems, bodywork, and other major areas of required knowledge
  • Acquire and maintain any licenses and/or certification necessary to perform task required for this position
  • Performs other task as assigned by the Director of Transportation or other administrative staff as designated by the superintendent
