About The Position

The School Bus Mechanic is responsible for skilled maintenance and repair of all school busses and school district fleet vehicles, ensuring they are safe and operational for student transportation. This involves diagnosing and fixing issues with engines, brakes, electrical systems, and other mechanical components through both preventative maintenance and reactive repairs. Key responsibilities also include performing safety checks, keeping detailed maintenance records, and ensuring adherence to all local, state, and federal Department of Transportation (DOT) safety and inspection regulations. Be prepared to respond to emergency situations during outside hours in order to ensure student safety

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in heavy-duty vehicle maintenance, preferably school buses or commercial fleet vehicles or completion of a vocational and or completion of postsecondary education in automotive or diesel technology.
  • Proven knowledge of both gasoline and diesel engine maintenance and repair.
  • Proficiency in diagnosing issues using hand tools, power tools, and computerized diagnostic equipment.
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements and Air Brake Endorsement. (can be obtained within 3 months of start of employment)
  • Air Brake Certification.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong knowledge of DOT regulations, state-specific school bus inspection requirements, and safety standards.
  • Basic knowledge of CDE regulations and EGSD district policy
  • CDE Annual Inspector (Preferred or will need to obtained within the first year of employment)

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic defects on school buses and other fleet vehicles (cars, vans, trucks, equipment).
  • Perform major and minor repairs on gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, brake systems (air and hydraulic), steering, suspensions, and drive trains.
  • Troubleshoot and repair complex electrical and electronic systems, including lighting, charging, starting, surveillance systems, and specialized equipment like wheelchair lifts.
  • Execute a comprehensive preventative maintenance (PM) program according to established schedules and procedures.
  • Conduct thorough safety inspections and annual certifications as required by state and federal regulations (e.g., DOT and CDE)
  • Perform oil changes, tune-ups, lubrication, fluid checks, and tire maintenance (changing, balancing, and repair).
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all maintenance and repair work performed, parts used, and inspection results using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) or paper records.
  • Assist with inventory management, including ordering, receiving, and stocking parts and supplies.
  • Ensure the maintenance shop and all equipment are kept clean, orderly, and in safe working condition.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures, including the proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Operate service trucks and respond to emergency road calls to perform repairs or assist with disabled vehicles.
  • Order parts and maintain inventory
  • Communicate effectively with transportation staff, including bus drivers, to understand reported issues and convey repair status.
  • Attend required training and professional development to stay current with evolving vehicle technology and regulatory changes.
