About the position

The Bus Driver operates school buses under various weather conditions, including fog, rain, hail, sleet, snow, and ice. The primary responsibility is to transport students and authorized persons on regular school routes and during field trips, extracurricular activities, and other special trips as authorized by school district officials.

Responsibilities

  • Drive a school bus on scheduled routes and trips in support of district approved activities.
  • Inspect and clean school buses and related equipment as required by state and district policy.
  • Maintain control of student passengers related to safety and report unsafe acts or conditions.
  • Complete forms, records, and reports as required by state or local school district policies.
  • Successfully complete school bus driver training programs established by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction or the school district.
  • Operate a school bus in accordance with the laws of the State of Washington and district policies.
  • Perform other school bus driver related duties as directed by local school district policies.
  • Detect and distinguish traffic sounds occurring from any direction outside the bus.

Requirements

  • Vision - 20/40 in the best eye, with or without corrective lens.
  • Must be 21 years of age and have at least five years of experience as a licensed driver of a passenger vehicle.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State School Bus Driver's Authorization or be able to obtain one upon completion of district provided training.
  • Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Drivers License with passenger endorsement, school bus endorsement, and air brake restriction removed, or be able to obtain one upon completion of district provided training.
  • Must certify a good moral character, meaning that they have never been convicted of drug use, sale, possession or transportation, molestation, abuse, injury or neglect of a minor, hit and run driving, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, or negligent homicide while driving.
  • Must not have incurred three or more speeding tickets within the last 5 years.
  • Must not have had their driver's license suspended for any reasons related to vehicle operation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to perform basic first aid including CPR.
  • Legible and accurate completion of forms, records, and reports.
  • Sufficient strength and agility to assist ill or physically impaired students to enter or exit a school bus.
