About The Position

Bus Drivers are responsible for operating ASC vehicles designed with wheelchair lifts and seats to safely transport passengers with physical, emotional, or developmental disabilities in a safe, courteous and professional manner. This position is considered safety sensitive and is subject to periodic background screening and drug testing, including random drug screens.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED certification.
  • Knowledge of developmental and intellectual disabilities and two (2) years of experience working with intellectually and/or developmentally disabled individuals.
  • Must have held a valid Florida driver's license (not a learner’s permit) for at least the past three (3) years, a clean driving record and automobile insurance, must be at least 21 years of age per insurance requirements
  • Must pass practical road test.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical, including DOT medical card and DOT Drug Screen and Level 2 background screening. Note: Employee will be subject to a drug test, employment history and criminal background check at least once every six (6) months.
  • Must pass AHCA background screening.
  • Must have good attendance and work performance record as verified by reference check prior to offer of employment.
  • Applicants will be disqualified for any of the following traffic-related offenses: More than one (1) moving violation within the last three (3) years. At-fault accident within the past three (3) years. Failure to appear or failure to pay within the past three (3) years. Reckless driving conviction within the past seven (7) years. Any reckless driving conviction causing injury. Conviction of driving under the influence of any prohibited substance within the past seven (7) years. Two convictions for DUI in a lifetime is automatic disqualification. Conviction of DUI causing injury. Convictions of driving while suspended or revoked. Suspension within last three (3) years. One suspension for PIP permitted. Manslaughter charges resulting from the operation of a motor vehicle. Conviction of hit-run and/or hit-run property damage. Any combination of violations that indicate a pattern of irresponsibility or poor judgment.

Responsibilities

  • Safely transport individuals according to pre-determined schedule.
  • Provide door-to-door transportation for ASC students (DOE and Private School)
  • Operate wheelchair lift and assist, fasten wheelchairs and other medical or mobility equipment in a secure fashion.
  • Refer to and implement route maps, GPS, time schedules, and instructions for trips.
  • Transport students to and from ASC.
  • Adhere to all traffic laws, safety rules, regulations, and ASC policies and procedures at all times.
  • Maintain, support and promote a safe environment while transporting individuals/students ; Safeguard the welfare of the individuals and uphold their rights at all times.
  • Performs other related duties similar in nature and level as assigned.
  • May be required to mentor new drivers about routes and operating procedures.
  • Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle following the Daily Vehicle Checklist; Perform safety checks of equipment, seat belts, lifts, etc.
  • Ensure the vehicle’s interior and exteriors are clean at all times. Remove trash daily.
  • Promptly report repair and maintenance issues and other problems to the Transportation Coordinator. Follow-up as needed.
  • Complete trip logs during each route and at the end of each day.
  • Report hazardous or dangerous conditions along route and at passenger/student loading zones, including such hazards as unusual traffic, road conditions, obstructions, construction, and potential criminal activity.
  • Immediately report traffic incidents and/or accidents to the appropriate authorities and ASC management; Provide assistance in controlling accident or incident scenes.
  • Write reports and complete forms, including, but not limited to accident, incident and motor coach discrepancy reports, run sheets, mileage and gas records, and passenger counts.
  • Inform the nurse on duty of any illness or injury to individuals.
  • Participate in employee meetings and mandatory training classes, including but not limited to safety and AHCA training, as required.
