About The Position

The Strait Regional (0052) invites applications from qualified candidates for the posted vacancy. As part of the public education system in Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) was established on April 1, 2018, to deliver the public school program focusing on supporting student learning, achievement, well-being and overall success. The Strait Regional Centre for Education, with the support of approximately 1,166 employees, works diligently to achieve its mission “to empower our children and youth, within safe, equitable and inclusive environments to embrace a changing world as responsible, contributing and successful lifelong learners.” In 2025-2026, the SRCE operates 20 schools with approximately 5,948 students; and approximately 375 children are attending pre-primary programs at 14 school locations. Located in the northeastern part of Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education’s jurisdiction encompasses the counties of Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness and Richmond, an area of approximately 11,000 square kilometres with a population of 53,742 (Census 2021). The falls within the CUPE Local 955 job classification. (Route 221) Currently serving Loch Lomond Road, Hwy 4, Soldier's Cove, Lynches River Road, Grenville Street, Denys Street, Chaple Island serving EREC & RECA.

Requirements

Minimum class 1B, 1C, 2B or 2C license with air brake endorsement
Proven ability to deal effectively with students on the bus, gained through experience or Strait Regional Centre for Education sponsored training program
High school completion or equivalent in experience and training
Two months driving experience as a professional school bus driver
Must have completed a first aid course within the last three years
Successful completion of the Strait Regional Centre for Education sponsored casual bus driver training program, or completion of a recognized professional driver training program.
All employees of the Strait Regional Centre for Education must provide a current (within the last months), and clear Criminal Record Check-Vulnerable Sector and Child Abuse Registry prior to employment with the Strait Regional Centre for Education

Nice To Haves

Current Non-violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) Certification, preferred
Commercial Safety College courses or related safety courses would be considered an asset

Responsibilities

Operate a school bus in accordance with all safety standards as prescribed by the laws of the Province of Nova Scotia and in accordance with Strait Regional Centre for Education Policies and Procedures.
Perform pre trip inspections at the beginning of each work day.
Perform pre trip inspections prior to extra/co-curricular trips.
Complete all transportation related forms as required (Hours of Work, Route & Passenger Sheets, Daily Inspection Sheets, etc.).
Maintain discipline on school buses and follow Strait Regional Centre for Education policies and procedures of incidents on buses.
Report all accidents in accordance with Strait Regional Centre for Education policy and procedure.
Keep inside and outside of bus clean in accordance with Strait Regional Centre for Education standards.
Reports mechanical problems to the appropriate designate.
Operate the school bus in accordance with the route plan and schedule.
Attend all Driver In-services provided by the Strait Regional Centre for Education.
Other related duties as assigned.
